Leucoderma, also referred to as vitiligo disease, is a rare skin disorder that is characterized by the development of white spots or patches on the skin. The term leucoderma literally means 'white skin'. The layers of the skin undergo depigmentation and result in white spots on the skin. It is a distressing skin disease that can affect any part of the body. The gradual loss of the pigment melanin, present in the skin layers, results in white patches on skin. This condition is neither caused by microbial infection, nor is it the result of bad blood. It is not contagious and does not cause any organic harm to the body. This skin disorder can occur at any age and in either sex, however, it is more common in women. It can affect any part of the body, the hands, neck, back and the wrist being the most affected areas.

There are several reasons responsible for the occurrence of leucoderma, however, studies are still going on to find the exact cause. This skin disorder is often hereditary, but there are many factors that can trigger the condition. Excessive mental tension and stress, top the list of causative factors of this skin problem.

Vitiligo Symptoms
Leucoderma begins with a small spot somewhere on the skin and gradually expands to form a large patch. In the initial stages, these patches are pale in color which eventually become white as the pigment is lost. Several spots in an area merge to become a patch and in the course of time, the whole body is covered with these patches. The depigmentation is followed by loss of hair in that particular area. It also makes your skin highly sensitive to external factors. Alopecia (loss of hair) or premature graying of hair can also be indicants. The symptoms are clearer in darker skinned people than those with fairer skin.

There are several treatment options available for this skin discoloration. These options include topical medications, internal medicines, depigmentation therapy and radiation therapy. Leucoderma treatment basically involves restoration of the affected skin. There are several home remedies for leucoderma that prove effective in reducing the white patches on the skin. Some of them are as follows:
