Letting You in on a Secret: Storage Pods Make Moving Easier

Storage pods are a relatively new advent that combines a moving truck with a self storage unit. You have a pod delivered to your home, load it at your convenience, than the company picks it up and stores it at their warehouse. Then you have the pod delivered to your new home, where you can unload the pod at your convenience. Brilliant!
Moving is no picnic by any stretch of the imagination, but using storage pods makes moving easier – and while it might not make you want to move frequently, it will certainly make the whole process a lot less stressful. Used to be you’d have to pack up everything at once, get it loaded onto the truck when it arrived, and then reverse the whole process at your final destination.

Why are storage pods so useful when you’re moving?

• Easy access, for one. Rather than having to set aside a whole weekend to pack a big moving truck, you can load your pod a little at a time. It almost feels as if the clock has stopped ticking as you pack. This means no more chucking your belongings and cramming your boxes into the over-stuffed, poorly-packed back end of a moving van. You can pack in a much more organized fashion, which makes unpacking a lot easier.

• No steps. Pods are generally flush with the ground, which means the whole packing process is a lot easier on your back, legs, and arms. There’s no danger of falling out while you pack, either. Inside your pod, you’ll find nothing but empty space, unlike in most moving vans that feature strange nooks and crannies to accommodate the axel and the truck’s cab. This means your boxes will fit in neatly and stay put.

• Security. You pack your box, you pack your pod, you lock the door. There’s no danger of movers breaking your favorite lamp or scratching your kitchen table. You have complete control over how your belongings are packed. Pods are made to be moisture-resistant, and are also usually stored in climate controlled warehouses, rather than outside in a parking lot, like a moving van. While you’re packing your pod, just be sure to keep it locked when you’re not inside – you can generally have it set up wherever you like on your property, so you may want to have it within view so you can keep an eye on it between trips out there with boxes.

• No driving. When you move using a moving truck, you’re stuck either driving it yourself or paying a high price to have a professional driver haul your stuff. Either way, using a moving pod is a much more pleasant and affordable option.

When you use a storage pod, be sure to follow these tips:

• Be organized. Use a colored stick system to keep track of what room each box should go into in your new home.

• Buy boxes. Packing in boxes that are uniform in size and shape makes the process a lot easier, and they’ll hold up a lot better than the free boxes you can scrounge from grocery stores.

• Pack your boxes full. When there is empty space in a box, it’s likely to collapse when other boxes are stacked on it. Fill extra space with towels, sheets, or crumpled newspapers.

• Pack your most valuable objects toward the back of the pod. Pods are really secure, but this extra security measure will help you feel even more confident that your valuables will be safe.

Once you move using a storage pod, you’ll never want to go back to the old-fashioned big truck method. It’s easier on your back, and your wallet – and you’ll be a lot less stressed, too.
