Let the Martial Arts Weapon Choose You

When you first start in martial arts weapons training you will be given the option of choosing from a variety of weapon styles. Play around with them all at first and then focus your efforts on to one in particular.
Don’t let the title of this article throw you off. This isn’t some crazy philosophy lesson that will tell you if you want to start martial arts weapons training you should just meditate and let the weapon mystically appear to you. Instead, the title means that you should try all of the weapons available to you before you start trying to master one in particular. Why do this?

Well, you won’t know exactly which weapon suits your personality and flare the best until you have tried them all and you won’t be enthusiastic about learning the weapons that you have no interest in wielding. Let the right weapon tell you when it is right for you, you will know when you wield the perfect martial arts weapon.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There are a few weapons that everyone should start out with before anything else because they teach the fundamentals of all weapons. Those martial arts weapons are the escrima sticks and the bo staff. You can learn a lot about almost any other weapon type by first practicing with these basic weapons.

Personally I found that the bo staff was by far my favorite weapon of all because of the versatility it offered and the power it let me wield but you might find that a different weapon is right for you. My father enjoys using the tonfa or night stick for example.

Once you have trained with those two foundational martial arts weapons you can then graduate to more advanced weapons with more advanced techniques. It is at this point where you should start playing around with all of the weapons your particular martial arts style incorporates and decide which one you like the most.

It takes a lot of time to master a particular martial arts weapon set so choosing one to focus on right off the bat will really set you apart from the others who are trying to learn all of them at once. You’ll excel faster in your particular weapon and you’ll notice that you can defeat opponents in sparring matches a lot easier.

Martial arts weapons training can be fun but it can also be very dangerous. As you learn about new martial arts weapons and try them out make sure that you are always under the supervision of an expert instructor. Don’t use your weapons on your friends and family and always try to only use them in self defense.
