Leopard & Leopard Server: New Features

An overview of some of the new features available with Apple's Leopard and Leopard Server release.
You may not have heard much about Apple's Leopard operating system, Mac OS X 10.5. Here we will take a look at some of the new features in Leopard.

Spotlight: Spotlight provides rich syntax in Leopard, letting your search on a series of Macs including servers using Mac OS X Leopard Server. Spotlight will include the results of this broad search in your results. In short, that means you'll be searching in one step, using one machine with access to the network. The searches use improved Boolean logic that lets you enter 'and,' 'or,' and 'not' in search requests; you can also search by using file attributes such as author, keyword, and type to narrow down your results.

Desktop Features

Dashboard: Arguably one of the best features of Mac OS X 10.5, the 'web clip' allows you to take a portion of a Web page and turn it into a widget without having to code it. The online demonstration shows just how cool this feature is.

Time Machine - Although Apple has Backup, it has continued on to bigger and better things with the introduction of Time Machine. Backup immediately does a complete backup of your system, to an external drive or network sharepoint. Then, it backs up files which have changed on a periodic basis. You can retrieve past versions or recently-deleted files by zooming your window back through time.

Server Features

Mac OS X Server 10.5 is the first release of the Mac OS X Server that Apple in recent years, the sixth OS X server release overall. Leopard Server delivers on new features which are both unexpected and anticipated:

iCal Server: This mash-up of standards (based on the CalDAV) facilitates Open Directory integration, free-busy checking, and calendaring.

Spotlight Server - The uber-fast metadata and content search engine allows for fast searches through the shared-storage gigabytes at your business.

Teams Directory - This built-in wiki server takes Apple's previous blog-server solution another step in the right direction.

Recently, rumors have surfaced that NSA is currently revising the Mac OS X 10.3 security paper, to accommodate Mac OS X 10.5.
