The lemon water or the Master cleanse, was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941. It is one of the crash or fad diets, actually meant for detoxification, but, used widely for weight loss. As the lemon water diet comprises having only lemonade or lemon juice (it is also known as lemonade fast), one obviously loses weight. Let us take a look at the diet plan in detail.

Recipe

According to this diet plan, one is supposed to have only lemon juice or lemonade all day long. Before starting the actual diet, one should reduce consumption of processed and junk food, then slowly go for vegetable soups and broths and finally, begin the diet by having only lemonade. The following are the ingredients required to make the lemonade.
  • 2 tbsp of lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp of maple syrup
  • 1/10th tbsp of cayenne pepper
  • 8 oz of purified water
You should mix all the ingredients and make a lemon drink which should be consumed 4-5 times a day. In fact, whenever you feel hungry, you should have this lemonade drink. One can have warm lemon water in the morning and cooler one during the day. Along with this, you also need to have herbal tea (once in the morning) and salt water drink once during the day for proper bowel movement. It is strongly recommended to not eat anything else at all, when on this detox diet. Using warm lemon water helps in faster detoxification of the body.

You should not stop the diet abruptly and have solid foods immediately, as the body needs time to adapt to the changes. After completing the diet, you can have only fruit juice for the next 1-2 days; then have vegetable soups and broths; and finally on the 4-5th day, switch to solid foods. The lemon water cleanse can last from 7-40 days. It should not exceed for more than 40 days. On the other hand, although, the diet can be followed for 3-4 times a year, there should be a gap of at the least 3-4 months between each diet.

Side Effects

According to the reviews, there are several side effects associated with this diet plan. Firstly, most of the people suffer from diarrhea or loose motions on following this diet. Secondly, people also experience fainting or dizziness caused due to less consumption of food. Constant feeling of hunger, symptoms observed due to vitamin and other mineral deficiency, etc. are the other side effects that are observed if the diet is followed for a longer period. Therefore, it is advisable for people to consult a doctor before going for this diet plan. On the other hand, people suffering from any chronic diseases, kidney diseases or anemia; pregnant women, etc. should not follow the Master cleanse diet.
