Leg cramp is the sudden and painful contraction of a leg muscle. The muscles of thigh, calf as well as foot are likely to contact due to some unknown reasons. Women gain a lot of weight during pregnancy and the legs have to bear this excess weight which results in pain and cramps. Secondly, it is also believed that the increases size of uterus puts excess pressure on the circulatory system, including the blood vessels, that travel from the legs to the heart. This is also considered as one of the potential causes of leg aches during early pregnancy.

On the other hand, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance are the other reasons for nocturnal leg cramps in pregnant women. When the amounts of nutrients and minerals in the body decreases, the person may suffer from leg muscle cramps.

Treating Leg Cramps
Women should not worry if they experience leg cramps during early pregnancy, as it is a common condition. There are several home remedies that can help in easing the pain and cramps. You can place a hot water bottle or have a warm bath in order to relax the muscles. If you wish to prevent leg cramps at night, have a warm bath before going to bed. Secondly, calf exercises like stretching calf muscles; rotating ankles and wriggling toes daily for a couple of minutes helps in treatment of leg cramps. It is also essential for pregnant women to take sufficient rest. Also, if the cramps are caused due to mineral deficiency, it is recommended to consult the doctor and make changes in the diet or have supplements if necessary.

Leg cramps experienced during pregnancy can be prevented by following some simple methods. Firstly, it is essential for pregnant women to have a walk or lighter exercises daily for 5-10 minutes. They should wear suitable heels and supportive stalking if required. They should not sit with crossed or folded legs for long time; nor remain standing for a longer period of time. Also, it is necessary to have a balanced and nutritious diet to avoid nutrition deficiencies. It is also essential to have plenty of fluids or water in order to avoid dehydration. However, it is not recommended to have caffeine containing drinks like sodas, diet drinks, tea and coffee in excess amounts.

It is possible to get rid of leg cramps with the help of above mentioned methods. However, if they still persist, it is advisable to consult the doctor as early as possible.
