Interesting Left-Handed Facts

In this section, we are sharing some relevant information related to the underlying causes, overall health and brain development of the lefties. They are as follows:

Possible Reasons
So far, there is no conclusive evidence that can suggest any specific reason behind left-handedness. In many cases, it has been found that left-handedness run in families. Therefore, the genetic factors cannot be ruled out. Moreover, environmental factors like exposure of the fetus to high testosterone levels, birth trauma and physical conditioning could also be responsible for left-handedness.

Brain
The human brain is cross wired which means that its dominant side controls the opposite side of the body. In other words, left handers are considered to be right-brained and it is just the opposite for the right handers. As the right hemisphere of the brain controls music, art, perception and such other creative modes, it is believed that left handers are more creatively inclined. This fact is supported by the evidences that more left handers are found in those professions where lots of creativity is involved.

Genetic
No such gene has been identified so far which can be held responsible for left-handedness. It is true that some families have more number of lefties than others but here is no substantial evidence to prove the reason behind it. This is more because two right-handed parents can have left-handed child while two left-handed parents can have right-handed child. Thus, whether the gene plays any major role or not is not quite clear.

Life Expectancy
A research study conducted a few years ago claimed some strange left-handed effect on death. According to that, on an average, a right-handed person lives nine years more than a lefty. Later further studies have revealed that it is not correct. A more recent research have found that lefties are slightly more vulnerable to stomach problems like colitis, Crohn's disease, etc. Though no reason have been given to clarify that.
