Learning to Sing Harmony - is it Easy?
Learning to sing harmony is something many singers attempt, but fail. There are a couple of techniques that can help you learn harmony.
Many singers stumble when learning to sing harmony because they’re aiming at the wrong place. There are certain things you can practice to learn this style of singing.
- First, you can invent harmonies while singing along with some of your favorite songs written by others. This is a really fun singing practice and works well no matter your skill level. I do this all the time when driving in my car and listening to the radio. If you start just making up harmonies to sing with the song on the radio, you will not only get better at harmony, but you’re also learning to write songs! Your ear is developing. It’s just a great practice as a developing musician.
- Next, you can aim to sing flat when learning to sing harmony. Many people try to hit the notes perfectly and at the right pitch when doing harmony but if you actually try to sing it a little flat, many times it sounds great. Crosby, Stills, and Nash do this very well in many of their songs. It may be difficult at first to actually try and sing things flat, but you’ll get there. This is one of the hardest things at times for people to do when learning harmony. To learn to sing flat.
In the End, Can I Learn Harmony?
Yes, you can absolutely learn harmony. Just learn the specific notes and pitch that create certain feelings in harmony. Some notes at the right pitch really create certain feelings and you will learn what these notes are and when to use them in certain types of songs.
Practice the two main things I discussed above and shortly you'll be learning a new type of singing. Again, pay attention to some of your favorite artists and notice the notes they’re hitting and the feeling it produces in the song when learning to sing harmony.
