Learning to Drop an Addiction

People are addicted to all sorts of things. Your addiction could be alcohol, illegal drugs, painkillers, diet pills, etc. Regardless of what your addiction is, it has taken control of your life. When you put the object of your addiction at a higher level than friends, family, hobbies, school or work, that is how you know it has taken over your life. Many people with an addiction don't seek help because they are in denial. They really believe that they could stop of they wanted to, they just don't want to.

The first thing you should do to drop an addiction is admit you have an addiction. You need to be honest with your self before you can accept help from others. Secondly, get professional help. I'm sure all your family and friends mean well, but they are not qualified to help you through this. Depending on what your addiction is, you can go to a rehab facility, enter a twelve step program, or see a doctor for advise as to what would be best for you.

You need to find a goal to focus on. What has the addiction taken from your life that you want back. You can succeed dropping an addiction just because your spouse wants you to. You need to be committed. Maybe you are doing this to keep your career, or your kids, or maybe your goal is simply to not feel so bad all the time. It doesn't matter what the goal is as long as you have something to think about when it gets hard.

Surround yourself with people who are supportive of you dropping your addiction. You want to avoid people who would encourage you to relapse. This may mean finding new friends, but it what you need to do. Alcohols will not stay sober for long if they are hanging out at bars. You need to really change your life.
