Learn More about Yourself through Your Family

Have you ever heard the question arise from a friend that they want to find out who they are? It is interesting to me that people are constantly trying to figure out who they are and what they represent. I am a believer that we can learn more about ourselves from learning about our ancestors and our past. By gaining more information about those people we may be able to learn a little more about ourselves.

How can our history help us learn more about ourselves? Well, we have heard the saying: You are just like your father or your mother. This may be true, often times I find myself saying things that my Dad would say, or even acting in ways that are similar to the way my parents would react to specific situations. I find it interesting that their mannerisms have rubbed off on me, even though I didn’t mean for those traits to come into my life. So where am I going with this? Certain personality traits that we all have may have come from the way were raised, our parents treated us in certain ways which could have inspired us to react in the ways that we do. This trend keeps going back, our parents learned from their parents who learned from their parents. Family culture can extend back many generations, which may explain why we celebrate certain holidays in a fashion that others find odd, but seem completely natural to us.

Family history is a great way to find out more information on who you are and why you act in some of the ways you do. Throughout your research you may also find interesting information which will be cherished by those in your immediate family. Question such as where your family was centuries before, how you came to be in the area where you live now, and why your family has the beliefs they have now? These are all interesting questions that you may be able to answer by doing your own family history.

Researching your family history can be a difficult task if you do not know where to begin. There is so much information to be found and sorted through in order to find the things you want to know. Getting started may sound a little overwhelming, so if you would like to start there are a few places where you can begin:
  1. A local library: This is a great place to start; many will have archives of news articles that you will find very helpful in finding obituaries, and other related articles which will enhance your knowledge of where your family has been.

  2. The internet: There are many sites on the web that are willing to assist in finding information about your loved ones. This is a very hot topic on the web and people are always willing to help. You can find sites that offer people searches and history searches to guide you in your research

  3. Genealogy Agencies: If you feel that you do not have the time to research your family history there are companies that offer genealogy services to assist in collecting helpful data that extends many generations in the past. These services are usually fairly inexpensive and can provide you with excellent reports and insights on your family.

Understanding people and how to relate to individuals is a very interesting concept which can be studied and practiced for an entire lifetime. However, if it is mastered, it can be an extremely helpful teaching tool. Family history is a great way to go about doing that, and can lead to more happiness in your life. If you choose to work with a genealogy agency in seeking out this information, be sure to select a professional genealogist who can provide you with the results you need.
