Fixing Loose Nuts
Loose nuts can be one of the causes for a leaky faucet. This could be due to a screw coming loose either in the packing area or at the base of the handle. Just take off the handle and fix leaky faucet using a wrench to tighten the screw. In case the screw needs to be replaced, take it to a shop and get a new one of the same size.

Washer Problem
This is another cause of leaky faucet. Overtime a washer may get worn out, loose or simply become hard. The washer seat may also wear due to use. This may cause the faucet to drip. To be sure, one needs to inspect the damage and replace the washer.

The first step for repairing leaky faucet is to turn the water supply to the faucet off. This can be done by turning off the supply that may be present just below the sink or in the floor cabinet. Some may have to turn off the main house shut-off valve, that is usually present in the basement or elsewhere in the house. Now turn on the faucet to ensure that the water supply has been cut off.

The next step is to take the handle off. This can be done by unscrewing the screw at the top or at the back of the faucet handle. Sometimes, these screws are under some decorative plastic pieces, that either unscrew or come off when pried with a knife blade. If you have to use a knife blade, then pad up the area with tape or cloth to protect the finishing of the cap. Now, remove the handle and unscrew the packing nut below it. This would expose the stem. Rotate the stem in the direction in which you would rotate the handle to turn the faucet on. This will help you to take the stem out of the faucet. Examine the stem. In case the threads are damaged, then the stem needs to be replaced with a new one.

Once done with the stem, inspect the washer. The washer is held in place at the bottom of the valve unit with screws. Remove these screws to get the washer out. Examine the washer for damage. In case it has been squeezed or has got worn out, it needs to be replaced with a new one. Since, the washer has been removed and screws holding it has also been dismantled, take a look at the screws as well. If they appear damaged, needless to say, replace them with new ones.

Now put the washer back in the valve unit. Replace the stem and the faucet handle. Turn on the water supply and check if the faucet is still leaking.
