Leaking Washing Machine

You wake up in the morning and walk towards your washing machine to do your laundry and you realize that your washing machine is leaking. Before your pick up that phone to call a repairman to fix the problem, it may be a good idea to check if it is possible for you to fix the problem at hand. Fixing a leaking washing machine may not be exactly the easiest of things to do but if you can locate the problem, and if it is a minor one, then you can save on the money that you will spend on a handyman repairing the problem. Fixing a Washing Machine with a Leak

For proper washing machine troubleshooting, it is first important to locate the source of the leak. If you see that the leak is at the bottom, then you will be able to observe remnants of water and soap. If the leak is big, this trail should be easy to spot. With smaller leaks you can place a newspaper under the machine to check the exact spot of the leak. Once you have located the leak, check where the leak is originating from. If it is above and dripping down, then work your way upwards from the leak that you have located. Depending on where the leak was, there are different ways of fixing a leak.

A common misconception which leads to the belief that the washing machine is leaking comes from a clogged floor drain. It may be the clogging that is causing water puddles on the floor. Check the floor drain and see whether or not it needs any unclogging for an easy fix. The water is often attributed to the washer. If you have discovered that the source of the leak is the hose or the pipe, then for troubleshooting the problem, you need to check the hose for any form of wear and tear. Fill the washing machine with water and then drain it to check for leaks. Once you have located the source of the problem, replace the hose with a more durable stainless steel mesh pipe. Another reason for the leak maybe a connection that is loose. Tighten clamps and couplings to fix any leaks and also check the faucet attachments.

Another possible cause of a leaking washing machine could be the washer in the hose. In such a case, you do not need to replace the entire hose but only the internal washers. Using a screwdriver, you can take out the worn out internal washer and replace it with a new one. It is advisable to replace washers on both ends of the hose to avoid any future problems. Calcium deposits from oversudsing and rust can also cause leaks. You will need to start a fill cycle to check if the leaks are internal. To reduce the calcium deposits and disintegrate the same, you can pour in half a cup of vinegar mixed with 32 ounces of water, into the washing machine. Also in the long term it is advisable to use a detergent which is low sudsing. Another common washing machine problem in a front loading washing machine that can lead to a leak is the tearing of the seal of the front door. Pressing on the seal and visually expanding it will help you locate the holes. In such a case you will need to replace the door seal. While you can do this on your own, it may be advisable to get a professional to replace the door seal.
