Leadership Development Training Programs
Darwinism has been rocking the world hard lately. Hence, acute requirement for leadership abilities for every individual. Even on a more humanist note, the world is in need of good leaders. This has given rise to several leadership development programs. Read on to know more about them.
In this article, I will discuss the basic activities and end results, with reference to the goals that are (or should be) set for these programs. There could be variations on several grounds, but the basic aim is just the same - better performance!
Firstly, any leadership development training program should (and does) start with training on how to be a team player. That is absolutely vital, leaders should know how to walk with the team before they learn how to lead it. If a leader does not know how to be a team player, then he might have unrealistic expectations from the team, leading to frustration. This will lead to a result in the opposite direction - worse performance!
Secondly, the leaders have to be made to realize, that a failure in achieving targets is not a failure in general. Circumstances can have an impact on performance. Being the leader demands the individual to take onus of the situation and help his team perform better in the next segment. All in all, if the leader is going to "lose it" at his team for small deviations, for genuine reasons or for honest mistakes, they will lose faith in him. Purpose will be lost that way, right?
Thirdly, a leader should be aware that the best way to lead is by example. No one respects leaders who cannot practice what they preach. If you want to cultivate a habit in your team, to come to office at a specific time, you need to be there at that time. Yes, you should tell them about it too. But the practice has to go hand in hand with the preaching. A leader cannot give lectures about his past performance, and expect it to work without displaying the same in the present. Be a friend to every team member, not a parent, not a boss, and certainly not a preacher!!
Fourthly, at a training program, a leader is trained to carry out self-assessment before any other. One has to be aware, that even if they are a leader, they need to go through constant improvement to stay at the altitude and go higher in the hierarchy. Stagnancy could prove to be detrimental to anyone's career, leader or not. As such, self assessment methods are discussed to help the leaders to understand their own capabilities and SWOT analyze themselves effectively.
Fifthly, a leader's body language has to be appropriate. This can be taught with the help of generic personality training. Kinesics (body language study) can be very helpful to a leader. Primarily, to make sure that they are never intimidating in their stance, nor seeming lenient. It should be the right synchrony of confidence, power and humility. Secondarily, leaders should be able to judge a team member's mental state or attitude from one look. This can happen effectively with the help of knowledge of kinesics.
And lastly, a leader should be aware, that no matter where an individual lies in the hierarchy, each individual has to be treated with respect. They say, "to receive respect, you need to give it first". Any team that is built on the foundation of mutual respect and faith can do wonders in any field. To make sure that your team achieves the accolades it deserves, you, as a leader, will have to keep the environment that hones such behavior at a primal level. Lead on!!
