Chapter Two
"Cabin by the Lake"
The rest of the week was mundane and boring. I was ahead in almost all of my classes, Abby was trying to convince me that Noah was in love with me and Noah had said remotely nothing to me all week long. He just stared at me most of the time. He would walk me to most of my classes. He would sit by me at lunch but he wouldn't talk to me.
I woke up on Friday and got ready for school. Today was the day that my dad was coming from Washington. I cleaned my room really good. As I left my mother reminded me that I shouldn't make any plans with Abby. I nodded my head and left for the bus stop.
It was pouring rain and I put on my hood. As I was walking up to the bus stop my pocket with my cell in it started vibrating. I didn't even bother to look at the caller ID, it was probably Abby.
"Hey chicken butt. It's kind of early to be calling me. I’m not even close."
"Is that how you greet everyone when you answer your phone?" This voice asked over the phone. I pulled the phone away to look at the number but I didn't recognize it.
"Who is this?"
"It's Noah. Listen I don't want to sound like a stalker, but I see you walking." I turned around to see where he was at. "It's the blue Corvette to your left." I looked at the Corvette that was across the street and waved. "Did you want a ride because I'm driving to school?"
"Kind of but I'm all wet I don't want to ruin-" He cut me off.
"Beth, don't be silly. Get in." He hung up and I closed my phone. I looked over at him still debating if I should get in or not. He turned his car around and pulled up to my side of the curb. He rolled down the window and leaned over through the passenger side window. "Come on, it's freezing." He opened the door. I got in and put my hood down. My curly red hair fell out. I got the rubber band out of my pocket and went to put it up.
"You should leave it down. It looks fine down." He merged into traffic and started driving. I put the rubber band back in my pocket. My phone started vibrating again. I looked at the caller ID and it was Abby.
"Hey chicken butt."
"Hey. Listen my mom wants to know if you need a ride because it's pouring rain." I looked at Noah.
"No I'm getting a ride." He smiled.
"Your mom's driving you?" I laughed.
"No. Noah is." I looked out my window.
"Noah. As in the guy that's madly in love with you?"
"Avery, yes." I looked over at him and he had the biggest smile on his face. He looked over at me and then he took my phone away from me.
"Noah!" I said trying to grab my phone but I couldn't grab it.
"Abby right?" He paused. "Well I was just wondering if you would miss Beth today if she didn't show up for school." He paused again. "Oh I would make sure of that." He looked at me. "I think that could be done." He paused and then he laughed. "Thank you Abby. I owe you one." He shut my phone and handed it to me. "She says don't do anything that she wouldn't do." I laughed. "I hope you don't mind but you're going to spend the day with me because well...I don't want to be out in that." He pointed out the window.
"You don't like the rain?" I asked him.
"I hate the rain. I hate getting wet period." He got on the freeway and increased speed immensely. I looked over at the speedometer and it was at 80 mph.
"Slow down Speedy Gonzales. It's raining, and going this fast your reaction time isn't so good. I kind of want to live to see my seventeenth birthday." He looked over at me.
"And how far away is your birthday." He said pressing the brake and slowing to a slow 55 mph.
"A while." He nodded.
"Are you always this smart?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean at school, you're ahead in all of your classes. You're best friends with the teachers. Then, just now, the whole reaction time thing. Is there a switch on your brain that you can turn off the smartness?" I laughed.
"I just use a little thing called common sense." I looked over at him. "So I'm cool with spending the day with you but I have to be home by-"
"Four because your father is coming to visit you. I already know." He looked away.
"Abby told you?"
"Yeah. What kind of shoes are you wearing?" I looked down at my brand new vans.
"Vans. Why?"
"Because we're going to my favorite place in the world but you have to walk a little bit and I don't want to carry you the whole way." He laughed. I looked at him. He looked so relaxed. I realized that this was the first time I had really talked to him. I smiled at him and he smiled at me. I felt these butterflies in my stomach and felt the blood rush to my face. I looked down immediately.
"Why do you do that?" He said almost disappointed that I looked away.
"I get embarrassed really easily. My face gets really red and...I don't know. I don't want you..." I trailed off.
"...You don't want me to what?"
"I don't like anybody to see me when I'm embarrassed." I looked out my window I didn't recognize where I was at all. It was like a forest area in the mountains. I rested my head against the window and folded my hands in my lap. The car started to slow down. When it was stopped Noah looked over at me.
"I didn't mean to...embarrass you..."
"Noah, you didn't do anything. I do it to myself. It just that I...never mind." I smiled at him. "Where are we at?" He looked down and got out of the car. I heavily sighed and unbuckled myself. I opened the door and got out.
"Noah?" I said. I looked around. I couldn't see him anywhere. "Noah?" I looked over at the trees that were in back of the car. I thought I saw something. ‘Is that a dog’ I thought to myself. I walked over to the trees. "Noah?" I whispered. He didn't answer. I started to freak out. ‘He wouldn't leave me here, would he?’ Thoughts of Noah leaving slipped their way into my mind. I started to walk into the forest when someone grabbed my hand.
"Where do you think you're going?" I jumped. I turned around to see who it was. It was Noah. I looked at him relieved. "You must of not have heard me when I said I was leaving. You look like you just saw a ghost." I looked down.
"I thought you left me. I got a little scared." He squeezed my hand.
"I wouldn't leave you with my car." He smiled. "It's brand new." He led me over to a trail and we started to walk down it. The rain had let up a little bit.
"I thought you hated the rain."
"I do. But we're not going to be in the rain for much longer." We were walking rather fast and I didn't see this huge puddle. Noah managed to walk around it, but I wasn't paying attention. I stepped in the puddle, tripped, and fell on the ground. I peeled myself out of the mud.
"Yuck." Noah was cracking up. He offered me his hand to get up, and I took it. I looked down at my brand new vans. ’Crap!’ I thought to myself
"What?" I looked up at Noah.
"Nothing. My shoes are just ruined." I sounded a tad mad. He looked down disappointed.
"I'm sorry Beth. Do you want to go home?" I grabbed his hand knowing that I sounded pissed. I smiled and started walking in the general direction we were walking in before. I looked back at him and he was smiling. I kept walking along this trail but the mud kind of made everything look like the trail. I stopped and looked at Noah.
"You have no idea where you are going, do you Beth?" I smiled.
"No I don't." He walked ahead of me.
"We're almost there. It's right up there. You can see it." I looked ahead of me and it was a huge cave.
"You're taking me to a huge dark cave?" He looked back at me a kept walking.
"Yeah. What's a matter? You look scared."
"I’m afraid of the dark, and I'm claustrophobic. Dark caves aren't really my thing, if you know what I mean." I smiled. He turned on this little path heading away from the cave. ‘Oh thank god.’ I thought. He laughed and I looked at him. I looked ahead and there, in the middle of nowhere, was a little, cozy cabin. He put his key in the lock and when he opened it I felt the warmth. He picked me up and carried me into the bathroom.
"I don't want you to track mud in. I have extra clothes you can change into." He smiled and put me in the bathtub. "Go ahead and take a shower. I'll bring you clothes in a sec." He smiled and started to walk away. I grabbed his hand. He stopped and looked down at my hand.
"Thank you Noah." He looked back and smiled. He shut the door and I carefully took my muddy cloths off. I folded them up and put them on top of the toilet. I turned on the water so it was almost boiling hot, and I took a quick, but needed, shower. When I opened the shower door my muddy clothes were gone and there was a nice big shirt and sweatpants. I put them on. I inhaled the shirt, it smelled heavenly. I walked out of the bathroom.
"Noah?" I asked looking around.
"I'm in the living room. Follow my voice." I listened to him sing a song. His voice was beautiful. It went through the whole house in sort of an echo sound. When I finally found him, he was sitting on the couch with his eyes closed. I jumped on him and straddled him. He didn't even jump. He didn't even open his eyes. "You smell fantastic." He whispered.
"Thanks. You don't smell so bad yourself." I went to get off of him and he opened his eyes. He put his hands around my waist and flipped me on my back, on the couch, so he was on top. "Hey!" He started laughing. "What was that for?" I asked.
"Showing you who the alpha dog is." He said smiling. I playfully growled at him. He growled back, but his was a scary growl. I barked at him and he laughed. He got off of me and walked into another room.
"Haha. I knew it! I won" I shouted. He came back in with a box.
"You won? You did not win!"
"You ran away with your tail between your legs." I smiled. He put the box in front of me.
"You want to pick a movie?" I looked through the box. ‘There's nothing I want to watch in here.’ I looked up at him and then down at the box. "If you don't want to watch a movie, what do you want to do?" He said sitting down next to me and closing his eyes.
"I don't know. How about talk?"
"Talk?"
"Yes talk. I know remotely nothing about you."
"I know. The less you now the better." I looked over at him. His eyes were open and staring at the ceiling. He turned his head so he was looking at me. "Don't look so butt hurt what do you want to know?"
I looked down at my hands. "Everything." I looked up at him and he had a scowl on his face.
"Beth, I can't tell you everything." He whispered
"Ok, I don't want you to tell me everything...anything will do." I whispered back.
"Okay. My name is Noah Avery. I just moved here-"
"From where?" I interrupted.
"Uhhh Washington?" He said confusedly. I looked at him.
"Washington? Liar. Keep going. I didn't want to know anyways."
"Ok. We moved here and I met you. End of life story." He smiled.
"So I'm an event in your life story?"
"Well...kind of. You are unique."
"Why thanks, I guess." He looked down at his watch.
"We have hours to kill. Are you hungry?"
"Kind of but I'll just eat when I get home."
"Beth, that won't be for hours. If you’re hungry, I have food." He walked into the kitchen. "I have hot pockets, or hotdogs. Umm I have..."
"Do you have anything that doesn't have meat in it?" He must have not heard me because he kept naming off foods.
"I could make you some hungry man TV. Dinners." He popped his head out of the kitchen. "They really fill you up." I looked at him.
"What else do you have?" He went back in the kitchen.
"I think we have gone through everything Beth. Oh, How about some beef stew?" He shouted.
"But I’m a vegetarian." I shouted back. I heard a big crash in the kitchen. I stood up. "Noah? Are you okay?"
"Yeah. It was just a plate. Stay in the living room there's glass everywhere." I sat back down. "You say you want to know about me and Beth do you know what I just realized? I know nothing about you...Care to share?"
"I’m Beth. I have lived here most of my life. I was going to school one day and I met you. End of life story."
"You left out the fact that you’re a vegetarian." He shouted from the kitchen.
"Well you left out the fact that you're not." I shouted back.
"Yeah but its normal not to be."
"It's normal to be vegetarian. It's no big deal Noah."
"Well, now I have no food you can eat. Unless of course you want to eat the breading off of a corn dog." I smiled.
"I'll just eat when I get home." I got up and Noah came from the kitchen.
"I'm sorry. I didn't think...You don't look like...Beef Stew? God I'm an idiot. You don't get anymore anti-vegetarian then beef stew." I laughed. He looked at me and started laughing. We went over and sat on his couch. I laid down with my head on his lap. He ran his fingers through my hair. I looked up at him. We were staring at each other. I wanted to reach up and brush his face. I didn't want to ruin this moment. I closed my eyes before I did anything stupid. Soon I was sleeping.
