Lawn and garden tools have been used for centuries, first to produce much needed food and later to help adorn our homes.
Lawn and garden tools have been important since humans first walked the earth and today they are still used for the same purpose, gardening. Gardening was a very important source of food up until the last few hundreds of years as many families grew their own fruit and vegetables. The value of gardening tools was very high whereas now gardening tools are so easy and inexpensive to find that they are not considered as valuable as they once where.

When gardening tools were scarce they were frequently stolen. Many reports in police logs and records have shown investigations dealing with stolen gardening tools. The vast majority of all gardening tools were custom made and many tools were imported and it took a lot of time and money to have the stolen ones replaced.

Craftsmen were the main constructors of lawn and garden tools, as many tools were made by local cutlers or blacksmiths. Many gardening tools were also imported from Europe, India and from South America. It is interesting to see the item lists of many cargo ships as gardening tools were just as important if not more then spices, fabric and other exotic goods.

Later on with the invention of smelting lightweight gardening tools were developed. Finally the industrial revolution brought about the current gardening tool sand the creation of metal alloys were able to produce very light but durable gardening tools.
