Laminate Floor Cleaning Tips
There are certain pros and cons of laminate flooring. Follow the tips on laying a laminate flooring, before installing this flooring. You need to take care of few things to avoid early damage.
- Do not slide heavy furniture over the floor, instead lift it.
- Gliders should not be run over the floor as they might scratch the floor.
- Never clean with scouring powders, abrasive cleaners or steel wool.
- Do not clean with 'mop and shine' products.
- Do not polish or wax the floor.
- Do not flood the floor with water.
- Remodeling or refinishing with sand is strictly not allowed.
Cleaning products are quite efficient in removing dust and grim from the floor. You can clean the floor by sweeping or with occasional damp mopping. If you are using a vacuum cleaner, make sure it doesn't have the beater bar. It's useful to pick up dirt from between the edges and in between the planks. The steps for cleaning a wooden laminate floor are mentioned below.
- Sweep the floor with a broom to remove the dirt before cleansing it.
- Dust the floor with a dry swiffer to clean up the remaining grime.
- Spray the floor with a wooden flooring cleanser with the help of a damp towel. Do not use soapy solution for cleaning.
- Now clean once again with a dry towel to soak the water completely. The floor shouldn't be left damp.
The texture of the floor shall be retained for a long time down the line if you follow the cleaning instructions judiciously. For some extra care, you need to put a little more effort. Prepare the homemade solution and use it every time you clean the laminate floor.
Solution # 1
In 4 cups of hot water, mix one cup of white vinegar. This cleaner should be used to mop the surface. You can also refill the swiffer with this solution before cleaning.
Solution # 2
In two cups of hot water, mix 2 ounces of dish detergent, 1 cup lemon juice and 2 cups of vinegar. You can cleanse the floor with a cloth dipped in this cleansing agent.
Solution # 3
Prepare a solution with 1 tsp of dish detergent, 2 tsp of ammonia and half cup of rubbing alcohol. Then pour 3 cups of hot water in to the mixture. Refill your ready-to-use mop with this solution.
Solution # 4
Diluted baby shampoo is a wonderful cleansing agent for laminate floors. In a gallon of hot water pour 2 tsp of baby shampoo. Damp the cloth in this solution and wipe the floor.
Solution # 5
Mix 1/4th cup of vinegar and ammonia in 1 tsp of dish soap. To make it dilute add 3 cups of water and fill the swiffer with this solution. You can also dilute the mixture with one gallon of water if you are using a cloth to clean the floor.
Generally, problems with laminate flooring arise if it's left damp for hours or if it is not installed properly. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't go for laminate flooring at all. You can definitely go ahead with laminate flooring as it is a cheaper way out. And especially now, when laminate floor cleaning is no longer a problem and is not as difficult as it had seemed.
