Lactase Enzyme
Lactase enzyme is an enzyme produced by the body which aids in digestion. For people who are unable to process this enzyme in the body, various supplements are available which have the same effect as the original...

A Brief Overview on Lactase Enzyme
As mentioned earlier, lactase is an enzyme produced in the small intestine, which helps in the breakdown of the lactose molecules, so that it can be easily ingested by the body. This essential enzyme is also believed to be compound sugar. In the body, the molecules of two simple sugars - glucose and galactose have been joined to form a single molecule of lactose. In case the body is unable to produce the required amount of lactase, it can lead to lactase deficiency, which is responsible for lactose intolerance. A deficiency of this enzyme may arise as a result of congenital defect, rare in nature, where the gene responsible for lactase production is mutated. An illness or disease in the small intestine like inflammatory bowel disease, which tends to destroy the cells of the brush border membrane of the small intestine is also one of the causative factors for lactase insufficiency. Hence, individuals who lower than normal levels of this enzyme are lactose intolerant.
Normal levels of lactase enzyme helps prevent the occurrence of lactose intolerance symptoms.. In case there is a deficiency in the body, this enzyme can be taken in the form of supplements like lactase tablets and liquid. It can also be administered in the form of intravenous drugs, which are easily assimilated into the bloodstream. Some of the benefits of dietary enzymes include treating indigestion, diarrhea, heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) etc. The dosage of this enzyme supplement is decided by the medical practitioner according to the requirement of the individual. However, an overdose of this digestive enzymes supplement can lead to a few side effects.
Side Effects of Lactase Enzyme
An overuse of any medication can lead to some ill effects on the body. The same applies to lactase supplements as well. Over dosage of the supplements of this enzyme can cause some side effects which may affect some organs in the body. Pregnant women and lactating mothers are more susceptible to these side effects.
- Allergic reactions are common side effects in people who are intolerant to lactase supplements. This can be seen as skin rashes which may have itching sensation, tingling sensation in the mouth and swelling of the face and lips etc.
- Some individuals may also experience a bloating sensation, stomach cramps, constipation, bouts of nausea induced vomiting, etc.
- Trouble in breathing and a feeling of tightened chest are also reported as side effects of this enzyme.
- Though rare, drug interactions may be seen as one of the digestive enzymes side effects. Therefore, individuals who are taking allopathic medications, over-the-counter drugs, or any other dietary supplement, must consult a doctor before taking lactase enzyme supplements.
