La Reunion – the World on an Island
Discover the charm of its bay, deepness of its valleys and the power of its volcano and a resplendent tapestry of influences.
Arab sailors called the island Adna Al Maghribain, or "Western Island". The Portuguese are thought to have been the first European visitors, finding it uninhabited and naming it Santa Appolonia. The island was then occupied by France and administered from Mauritus. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, French immigration supplemented by influxes of Africans, Chinese, Malays, and Indians gave the island its ethnic mix.
Reunion is one of the overseas departments of France and also an outermost region of the European Union, and thus the currency used is the euro. Reunion is also part of the Indian Ocean Commission.
The island greets you to discover the charm of its bay, deepness of its valleys and the power of its volcano and a resplendent tapestry, which also blends Indian, African and Chinese influences. Réunion has astounding geographical diversity, the landscapes vary from a kilometers with the magic of a kaleidoscope: from lava fields to lush primary forest, from jagged peaks to sprawling coastal cities. And they print their rhythm to a crowd of microclimates, spread out in the course of slopes. Piton de la Fournaise is one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes and depending on nature’s whims, you might even witness fiery-red molten lava. Meet Mario Titus, a Réunionnain, proud of his and his island`s - hospitality, interview:
