I Do Not Know/Unknown

While practicing the way of Zen, one may encounter different experiences. This Japanese song, written by an unknown monk, gives us a glimpse to such an experience.
I Do Not Know/Unknown
I do not know how many among us,
The younger monks,
Really understand the teacher.
Personally,
I find his lectures far from being clear;

And yet I have discovered that if I just sit perfectly still,
So silent that I am aware even of the blood pulsing in my ears,
And open my mind
To nothing special,
Just open my mind and that’s it,
And even though nothing happened
The first or second time,
One day I began to feel some reaction:
My heart started talking to me,
Telling me secrets I had not imagined before.

Later, I stayed in a state of great happiness,
As if there was a bright light inside of me,
And around me,
And they were both one light.

Then, sooner or later,
By force of habit I would do something
That pulled me against the flow of the river.
The light disappeared
And I found myself alone again,
Like the first time
I was separated from my mother.
