Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Begin your kitchen decorating scheme, as usual when working on home improvement, with a plan. Consider the different purposes you use your kitchen for - for cooking, for eating, for relaxing, for working and for entertaining. This will help you create the mood you want.
Think out of the box. There is no set way a kitchen 'should' look, especially if you are putting it to multiple uses. Which means, yes, you can put up that crystal chandelier if you want. You can line up your collection of tin soldiers or your beloved Barbara Cartland novels. Right next to that ornate mirror and that tank of exotic fish. Of course, you may want to exercise a bit of caution too. While asserting your personality in the kitchen, try not to put in everything with the sink. Err on the side of good taste.
Refurbish your kitchen cabinets:
Many a kitchen has taken on a fresh shot at fashion with a simple or not-so-simple refurbishing of the kitchen cabinets. Repaint your cabinets. You can try out different painting techniques like faux painting, glazing, stippling, ragging and crackling. If you are new to painting, experiment on cardboard before you attempt the cabinets. You can also add moldings and appliqués to your cabinets. You can buy these or make your own. If you are going to both paint and add moldings, make sure you fix on the moldings first.
Get a new kitchen counter-top:
Counter-tops come in different types - stone, granite, marble - and colors. You can select one that jells with your overall design. Think about the required maintenance too when you choose.
Add a kitchen island:
You can buy islands that are both aesthetically appealing and practically useful these days. If you have the space, get two. You can cook at one and have your meals at the other, not to mention get enough storage area for your stuff.
Add colorful and textured fabrics in your kitchen:
Put up bright new curtains, table-covers and appliance covers. Display colorful napkins and hand-towels. If you can afford the expense, you can get your kitchen chairs upholstered in a great-looking fabric. You can also get fabric-like wallpaper for your kitchen, just make sure it is easy to keep clean.
Get attractive kitchen ware and containers for your kitchen:
Go shopping in both upscale shops and flea markets, and buy interesting looking or antique cutlery, cooking utensils, bowls, plates, dishes, jugs, cups, glasses, napkin rings, bottle openers, salt and pepper shakers and so on. Get appealing coasters and place mats, or make your own by the simple process of creating artworks on paper or canvas pieces and getting these laminated in a tough, transparent plastic.
Hang up the kitchen pots and pans:
You can hang up some of your kitchen pots and pans from cabinet doors or from the ceiling. As long as they're not in the way, they can create a rather warm and homely atmosphere.
Display collectibles and treasured objects in your kitchen:
If you have a fancy collection of china or glassware or any other objects you've collected and think worth showing off (the fossil bone collection might be a trifle hard-put in the culinary department), show if off in glass-faced cabinets or on shelves of glass, wood or metal. You can try some creativity in the way you arrange the shelves.
Display artwork:
A good painting can make an amazing difference to a room. Put up artwork or prints by your favorite artist or have a go at creating some yourself. Add accent lighting near the frames to make the works standout more. Another idea, if you have the wall for it, is to make a charcoal drawing directly on the wall and fix a glass over it.
Display fruit, vegetables and flowers:
A nice glass dish of green, red or golden apples can add appeal to the kitchen, so also a large basket of mixed fruit. The same can be said for stringed-up onions or a vase of flowers or a window-box of flowering plants. They add a certain lively aspect to a kitchen. Just make sure they are real. Your family and guests will find the kitchen a more welcoming place if it's actually possible to bite into that apple or peel that banana.
