Kiss You Between the Ears (12)

God's Grace.
- Alec -

It was Sunday which meant we had the day off. I slightly pushed open Maggie’s door to find her sitting on her window sill seat. She gazed off into the endless skies.

"Come for a ride with me." I lean against Maggie’s door frame. She slowly turned her head and nodded. We walked to the stables in silence, hitching up the horses and riding out into the corn fields. I looked over at her as she let her fingertips brush the tops of the crops.

Finally we hit the river. The river wasn’t wild or too wide but it flowed well enough, I could get knee-high deep in. With large rocks and small pebbles you could see bottom easily. We sat on a rock that jetted out of the soil, letting our feet dangle in the cool water.

"Do you believe in God’s grace?" She asked looking up into the gaps of the trees leaves.

"I don’t know. I’ve never really felt it before." I say staring at her angelic face. "Why, do you?"

"I think so. After my mom died, my dad started drinking so much. To cope. I didn’t understand why but he would always be mad at me and hurt me. Bonnie tells me it’s because I look so much like my mother and it reminded him every day. One night he told me to leave and never come back... I packed my things and he locked the door behind me. I stood on the sidewalk while it rained." She paused, "It was raining so hard. My mother loved rainy days. She says rain is what made the flowers grow, she used to call me her little flower. But the only thing I could think about while I was standing on the sidewalk is, how is this going to make me grow mom..." She sighed.

"Anyway, I had nowhere to go, so I just started walking. Walking everywhere, anywhere. When the lightning started, I realized I was away, outside town. I saw this beautiful two-story country house ahead and decided to give it a chance. I walked up the front steps and rang the doorbell. When Bonnie answer I just began to cry. She told me to come inside and that she’d take care of me. She had me up in the bath in a split second, she helped clean all my wounds. I had cuts all over along with bruises." Maggie closed her eyes like she was feeling all that pain again and I wrapped a reassuring arm around her as if to take it away.

"She got me dry clothes and a blanket and had me sit in front of the fireplace while she made me food, I hadn’t eaten a good meal in days. I had a fever from the rain and she nursed me back to health. A complete stranger took a girl out of the rain and gave her food, clothes and shelter. Eddy was just as gracious. He loved me like I was his own. After I told them the story they bought a bed and fixed Eddy’s old study into a bedroom for me. Ever since they have loved and cared for me. If God didn’t show his grace through Bonnie and Eddy, I probably wouldn’t be here today..." And for the first time that day, she looked me in the eyes. I pushed the hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear.

"I will never hurt you like that. I will never make you feel like that ever again." I told her.

"When I met you, you took me by surprise... there was just something that drew me to you. I tried to fight it cause I didn’t want to believe that love was good. I didn’t want to hurt anymore. I didn’t realize I was missing out on happiness. I love you," and with that I kissed her. Letting everything just stop there.
