Kirk Cameron's Fireproof is Best ROI Movie of 2008
There were many winners at the box office in 2008, including smash hits like The Dark Knight and Twilight - but there were even bigger returns on investment in the movie industry that you may not have heard of.
If you are comparing movies from an investment standpoint, you'd have to say that Twilight was a bigger success than The Dark Knight - even though Heath Ledger smash grossed over $500 Million at the box office and made a serious run at Titanic as the largest-grossing film of all time. But Twilight's take of about $167 Million is more than four times its production costs of $37 Million, while The Dark Knight cost $180 Million to make and returned only three times its production costs.
And while The Dark Knight will certainly be remembered as the bigger movie of 2008, it will not be the most successful in terms of return on investment. And in the top 10 movies of the year, the best ROI goes to Twilight.
But beyond the top 10 movies of 2008, you'll find an array of highly successful films in terms of return on investment for movie studios and production companies. Some of the notable success stories of the year include High School Musical 3, which grossed over 8 times its production costs of only $11 Million. Then there was the Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana concert movie, which brought in nearly 9 times its production budget of $7 Million.
But the biggest winner of all in terms of 2008 Movie ROI: Kirk Cameron's Fireproof - a Christian-themed movie about a firefighter trying to save his struggling marriage. That movie brought back a staggering 60 times its initial production investment of $500,000. Even though the movie only grossed about $30 Million at the box office in limited release, it was a mind-blowing success from an investment standpoint. We should all be scrambling to invest in the next Kirk Cameron project, whatever it might be.
