There are numerous palm trees around the world, and giving an exact figure is difficult, but some report that there are around two thousand species of palm trees. Though, there are not many different palm trees as such, they can be categorized into two basic divisions, viz. the palmate and pinnate. This categorization is on the basis of their physical characteristic, namely, the shape of the leaves. Palmate shape of the leaves is like a 'fan' or our 'palm of the hand.' On the other hand, the pinnate is, as the name suggests, like a pin or 'needle' like sharp leaves.

There are other different types of palm trees which can be seen as one amongst the drought hardy palms, cold hardy palms, Northern palms, Southern palms, etc. These categorizations are according to the climate tolerance and geographical positioning i.e. on the basis of their natural habitat, which is mostly the tropical and subtropical regions.
