Kids Prefer Contact Lenses To Glasses

It is a fact that contact lenses boost the confidence of children suffering from myopia. This fact is backed up by a study conducted by the Ohio State University, which consisted of 484 children aged between 8 and 11, all suffering from myopia. The study analyzed the self perception that the children had while wearing glasses, in contrast to contact lenses.
The researchers were motivated by a belief that contact lenses could improve the self-esteem of children and before the observation started, they asked the kids what relationship they had with glasses.

The children were randomly split up into two groups. One group consisted of 237 children that had to wear glasses while the other group, 247 children, wore contact lenses throughout the entire 3-year period of the study.

The results showed that the children wearing contact lenses not only boosted their self-esteem, but also their social confidence and athletic ability also increased. Even children who liked their appearance in glasses had a positive attitude towards switching to contacts.

It is perfectly safe for children to wear contact lenses from 8 years old, but many opticians still prefer to wait until the age of 12 before they prescribe any contacts. Today’s contacts lenses are very durable and easy for children to clean and manage in general.

Even though monthly contact lenses are more durable and cheaper than dailies, daily contacts are preferred, as they do not require any lens maintenance. This way you keep risks of eye infection at a minimum.

It is, of course, important for parents to teach their kids how to manage the contacts. If you, or your child, need more information on this issue, it is always recommended to visit a local eye care professional.

Finally, the study showed that it was advisable for the parents to let the children decide what they prefer to wear; glasses or contact lenses.
