Kids lighting - Decorating Ideas for Kids Rooms
Are you designing a nursery, playroom or kids bedroom? The lighting is a focal point of the decorating process; each piece can alter your room into a oasis, casting soft light over the rest of your decor and tying everything in together. Your first step is to determine your lighting needs: if you have the option for a ceiling mount, or if a floor lamp would be more appropriate than table lamp. In a child's bedroom or playroom and even the bath, a nightlight is a must have as well.

Children's Chandeliers

Chandeliers are not just for the foyer or dining room anymore, and the designs for kids available chandeliers will astound you. Choose from metal to wood, and then choose your finish. Some options for metal are silver, pink, white, black, gold, bronze and most metals can be antiqued for that extra special touch. Wood can be painted almost any color, and accented with alternate colors like white with blue accents, or black with silver accents. Hard wired into the ceiling, make sure that you also have a dimmer switch installed which is ideal for a chandelier whose light fills up the whole room. Chandelier light bulbs can be used, or chandelier shades which are available to match many popular kids themes and decor.

Table & Floor Lamps

If your room is pink and brown, and the furniture is cream? Choose a piece that the base is cream, and accent it with an amazing shade in pink and brown. Custom shades are an affordable option for decor, and companies like Jubilee offer several hundred options. Table lamps can be simple and chic, like a turned wood base, or a pedestal or urn lamp.

Do you have a themed room? Search for a matching themed lamp base, like a ballerina lamp, airplane lamp or sports baseball lamp. Nursery with an animal theme? Try an adorable bunny lamp, with a solid color shade with a ruffle or ribbon trim. Put a table lamp next to the crib or bed, and use a matching floor lamp for behind a reading chair or a a corner in a playroom. Floor lamps really make a statement, and the shades again are a wonderful design item to draw attention to the decor.

Wall Sconces

Are you thinking: "Where would I use wall sconces in my child's room?" Well, much like Chandeliers, walls sconces are being used more and more in decor outside of the hallways. Sconces mounted on either side of the bed will grow with your child, it is perfect light for reading in bed, and saving the nightstand table room for the books. Kids baths are another ideal spot for wall sconces, have them put on their own switch if there is also overhead light so you can "leave the light on" for your child at night. In a playroom where storage space is the main priority, and there is no table or floor room for lamps? The economical solution is wall sconces. Many are hard wired and some are available as plug ins. Just like the chandeliers, use light bulbs or a decorative shade.

Popular lighting themes

Sailboat themes are popular, as are princess, sports, moon and stars, ballerina, airplane, dinosaur and trains. Another huge design element is crystals. Hanging crystals from a chandelier gives an amazing design effect and is perfect for a little girls room. Make the princess room of her dreams with a crystal dropped lamp or chandelier! Vintage lighting made with teardrop crystal prisms, long swags of crystal chains, with matching rosebuds is a very popular little girls theme that will carry into the teen years, crystals are always a hit.

The possibilities are endless for kids lighting, do not settle for something simple and common, really light up your room!
