Kids Chemistry Experiments
Chemistry experiments for kids can be fun and can help develop a habit of investigating the chemical properties of various substances. Let us discuss some of the kids chemistry experiments.
Fruit Juice Puzzle
Fruit juice puzzle can make chemistry for kids a fun activity. This chemistry experiment for kids is done to decide whether a fruit juice is really made of fruit or made of color, water and sugar. Let us take a look at it.
Material
- Plastic laminated grid.
- One dropping bottle of vinegar.
- One dropping bottle of washing soda solution.
- Four dropping bottles of solutions that are labeled as A, B, C and D. Each of the bottles must contain 10-15 ml of the solution.
- Bottle A-Grape juice concentrate.
- Bottle B-Cranberry juice concentrate.
- Bottle C-Blueberry juice.
- Bottle D-A mixture of blue and red food color in water along with sugar. The solution must look violet in color.
The foremost thing to do is to wear a pair of safety goggles before starting the experiment. Put one or two drops of juice solution in the first box of the first column on the plastic grid. Add two drops of acidic solution in each box of column number two. Then add two drops of basic solution in each box of the column number three. Add 2 drop of juice solution to the acidic and basic drops in the rows. The next thing to do is to observe the results. If the juice is fake, the color of the solution will not change. On the other hand, the real fruit juices change color after putting them in acidic and basic solution.
Change Colors
This experiment, out of the many chemistry experiments for kids, helps develop skills and systematically evaluate all possible solutions.
Material
- One plastic plate that contains 24 wells.
- A container that has clean water.
- A container to throw the waste solutions to dump.
- Potassium iodide, sodium thiosulphate, sodium hydrochloride, soluble starch and water.
- Five plastic bottles that are labeled A, B, C, D and E.
- Bottle with label A has 0.1 molar potassium iodide.
- bottle with label B has 1 molar sodium thiosulphate. (this solution must be prepared one day in advance as it is subject to bacterial decomposition.).
- Bottle labeled C has 50% sodium hydrochloride solution.
- Bottle D contains soluble starch and must be prepared freshly.
- Lastly, bottle E contains water.
Kids must wear sterile goggles before they start off with this experiment. Add few drops of two solutions in the well of the plastic grid. To do this experiment systematically, start with the solution from the bottle labeled A and mix any other solution in the well. Remember, each time you mix two solutions, note down the bottle name and the color of the combination of two solutions (e.g. A+B - no change in color). If you find that two wells produce the same color, start by pouring the third solution. In this way you can continue changing the colors and even find out the combination of solution that produces colorless solution.
Rainbow
In this kids chemistry experiment, you have to prepare a liquid rainbow. Let us have a look.
Material
- Ten 10 mm test tubes.
- Five dropping bottles (each of 60 ml).
- 1 test tube holder.
- Water.
- Food color.
- 95% ethanol.
- Rack for pipettes.
- 1 plastic cup for discarded mixtures of solutions.
Prepare solution in five bottles as follows:
- Water dyed red with food coloring.
- Mixture with 50 ml ethyl alcohol and 50 ml water and dyed with green color.
- Mixture with 25 ml ethyl alcohol and 75 ml water dyed with yellow color.
- Mixture with 75 ml ethyl alcohol and 25 ml water and dyed with blue color.
- Simple plain ethyl alcohol that is colorless.
These are some of the kids chemistry experiments. It is advisable that they must be performed under the supervision of parents or teachers. Have fun!!
