Kidney Stone Pain Relief

Suffering from a kidney stone can be a very painful ordeal. Prescribed medication along with some natural remedies can provide kidney stone pain relief. Yet, in some cases the pain may result into an emergency which may require prompt medical attention.
The human kidneys are extremely important organs of the human body. The basic function of the kidneys is to eject unwanted liquids, especially water from the human body. Proper functioning of the kidneys is extremely important due to the fact that if the liquids that are to be ejected remain inside the body, then there is a chance that the liquids would turn poisonous. The kidneys, that are located in the lower abdomen, are thus extremely important organs.

Kidney stones occur within the kidney as a result of deposition of minerals inside this organ. Kidney stones are small stones that are formed inside the kidneys. Though the size of kidney stones are usually very small and do not exceed even 1 cm, the existence of the kidney stone itself is a source of a lot of agonizing pain. There are several different treatments for the removal of kidney stones. Treatments vary from medication for the dissolution of the stone to even surgery. If the kidney stone is smaller than 6 mm, it usually passes from the urinary tract without any medical attention. However the kidney stone causes immense pain to the patient if it remains in the kidney or the urinary tract. Before the patient receives any medical treatment or cure, the intense pain has to be curbed.

NSAIDs
NSAID is a classified range of drugs that are used for relieving pain caused due to kidney stones. NSAID is an abbreviation for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. These drugs are commonly used to eliminate or reduce mild kidney stone pain. Most of these drugs are available over-the-counter. However, it is always advisable to consult an appropriate doctor or medical practitioner and have appropriate medicine and dosage prescribed. Note that over dosage of these drugs is very risky for the human body. The most prominent medications that are used for pain relief are NSAIDs, Naproxen and Ibuprofen. If the patient is under medical supervision, then physicians may also combine dosage of NSAIDs with acetaminophen such as Tylenol.

Opioids
At times doctors also issue opioid based medicines and painkillers. Though some of these drugs are available as over-the-counter drugs, consult a doctor and get a proper prescription, as there is a high risk of overdose and negative side effects. Opioids are basically chemicals that affect the central nervous system and the spinal column. Opioid receptors, which are present in the nervous system and the digestive system, are affected by these medications, due to which the patient experiences a 'numbing' effect. One must be especially careful while consuming these drugs, because the substances that are present in these drugs are very parallel to narcotics and there is a very strong possibility of the person becoming addicted to these medications. In addition, the over consumption of these drugs also may result into some very bad side effects.

Hospital Medications
Doctors and nurses usually resort to direct injection of medication in cases where the patient is in the hospital. Medications that are made up of morphine or Toradol are used in these injections. These type of medications are allowed to be administered only by the doctors, as these medicines have a direct effect on the spinal column and nervous system.

Natural Kidney Stone Pain Relief
Natural solutions for pain relief include, taking a hot bath and using a warm pad that helps patients to numb the pain. However, instead of resorting to such home remedies, it is always advisable to consult your doctor.

Kidney stones even if small in size, can be extremely painful and quick intervention and removal is necessary, due to the fact that it is capable of causing a great deal of damage.
