"Michael! Michael, please get up!" I yelled at him as he lay face down in the grass. I could hear him grumbling so I knew he was alive. I tugged on him and finally he stood up. He was clutching his left arms and I could see blood seeping through his fingers. Michael had been shot.

I tried hard not to cry but the tears came rolling anyway. Michael used his right hand to wipe them away and then started to run as fast as his unbearable pain would allow him. I quickly followed him and a new round of gunshots started to follow us. Michael fell a couple times because the sudden sound startled him and I tried as hard as I could to keep him moving.

We avoided the shots but everywhere I looked I saw people who HADN'T been so lucky. Guilty thoughts clouded my mind as I saw helpless and innocent people on the ground that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Run faster, Alaina! They're following us!" I looked backwards and sure enough Greg and the pothead woman were behind us. I sucked in my breath and I didn't even dare to let it out until we rounded the corner where all the big farms were. Once we had the shooters off our tail, Michael made his way to someone's grassy lawn and sat down on one of the chairs that had been placed there.

I could tell he was exhausted and that he had lost a lot of blood. His normally tan, healthy face was dirty and pale. It hurt just looking at how much pain he was in.

"Does it hurt?" I asked Michael as I keeled to the ground next to his chair. He looked down at me and his blue eyes seemed lifeless and dull.

"Not as much as before. It's numbing." I wasn't a doctor but I was pretty sure that it wasn't a good thing. I sighed and took off the pink sweater I was wearing and wrapped Michael's arm in it. I tied it as hard as I could to keep pressure on it. Michael mumbled a thank you and I was about to tell him I loved him before we heard the distant sound of loud click clacking.

My eyes widened and I grabbed Michael and we both dove behind a bush. I peeked through the leaves and I was relieved to see that it was just someone on a horse. I would normally have been more cautious but considering that I was desperate, I stood up and approached the person on the horse.

"What are you doing!?" I heard Michael whisper loudly. I ignored him and as I came closer the person stopped the horse. I squinted a little bit as I looked up. He was a boy about my age with big brown eyes and wavy brown hair. He smiled at me and I offered a small smile in return. In one quick motion he hopped of his white horse and landed next to me.

"Hey do you need help or something, babe." He said. I resisted my urge to roll my eyes because this guy was my only hope of getting Michael help. I turned around and yelled for my love behind the bushes. Michael stood up and slowly made his way towards us.

His face looked even paler and I could see the blood seeping through my sweater. I cringed and the guy stepped forward. His eyes widened and I could tell he was shocked.

"Dude what happened to your arm!? Here let me help." The guy placed Michael's good arm around his shoulder and lifted him a little. Michael shrugged and laughed weakly.

"You know the usual gunshot through the arm. No biggie." The guy laughed.

"I'm Alex by the way. I'm you want some help for your arm. I know somebody I can take you to. Just get on Speedy here." Alex patted his horse. He held his hand out to help Michael up but Michael just ignored it and got on himself. I waited and Alex turned to me.

"You can get on too, umm..."

"Alaina." I said for him.

"Alaina, hop on. I'll walk the horse." I nodded no and Alex shrugged and got on. He made the horse gallop and ran next to them. I didn't notice the rocky road before but now that I was running on it, it was brutal.

I tripped and I could feel a rock tear into my knee. I looked to see if Alex and Michael we're still there but they didn't notice and were far away now. I grumbled as I stood up. I rubbed my most likely bleeding knee and followed the horse tracks.

"Hey there, Beautiful!" I heard someone say behind me. I looked to see a group of preppy looking private school boys. They looked like they were in high school. I decided to ignore them though and I just kept following the tracks.

"Wait for us!" The boy said. He ran and caught up with me. He had dark hair and a pimply face. His black eyes made him seem even uglier. Boy, I sounded shallow. I quickened my pace but he grabbed my arm and brought me close to him.

"I haven't seen you around here before. Where are you from?" The rest of the boy's friends appeared and formed a tight circle around me.

"I'm from a town called None of Your Business and my name is If You Fucking Touch Me Again I'll Break Your Face." I said to him.

The boy raised his eyebrows at me and opened his mouth for a comeback. His mouth just stayed open because he had nothing.

I laughed and turned to leave. The school boys just smirked at me as I tried pushing them out of my way.

"Look Johnny she's trying to run away from you!" A red head said.

"It's not like she can get through us." Johnny, the dark haired pimply faced one replied. He grabbed me and out his hands on my butt. I gasped and kneed him in his crotch. He let out a loud yelp as his friends erupted into laughter.

I used this chance as an advantage and tried to get past them again but they kept their circle tight. Johnny lunged for me again but he missed. The boys started to come towards me making the space between Johnny and I smaller.

I knew something was going to happen but I didn't have the strength to fight them all of. I closed my eyes shut and waited for him to do something. When nothing came, I opened my eyes a crack and I saw two girls standing outside the circle with their hands on their hips.

"Wow, Johnny. You're so desperate that you decided to try to rape a girl?" One girl said.

"Yeah, why don't you get some Pro Active? Maybe then your nasty ass pimples will clear up and a girl might actually like you." The other girl said. Johnny backed and I seriously saw tears in his eyes. Not so tough now are we?, I thought.

The boys quickly separated before they were the targets of the girls' insults. I breathed a sigh of relief and the girls approached me.

"You okay?" They both asked.

"Yeah, thank you!" I waved to them as I ran towards the smudged horse prints. Because of that set back I was pretty sure I won't be able to find Alex or Michael. I slowed down as the horse prints started to fade and then they were finally gone. I kicked the dirt in defeat. How was I supposed to find them?

"Alaina! Over here!" I heard a familiar voice yell. I let out a loud sigh as I saw Alex's friendly face coming out of a house.

I almost knocked him to the ground as I jumped on him and bear hugged him. He blushed and I planted a huge kiss on his forehead. I didn't really notice that his face turned tomato red.

"Where's Michael?" I asked. I jumped up down, shifting from leg to the other.

"He's inside they have him on an IV we're just waiting for the paramedics to arrive." Alex said. Those words made me jump on him all over again. I let go of him and ran inside the house/hospital and was greeted by an old woman.

She probably could tell who I was looking for and pointed towards a door at the end of a hall. I nodded thanks to her and hurried down the hall. Once I reached the door, I quietly opened it. Michael was sitting on a gurney with and IV in his arm. The nurse was force feeding him pills and he'd always spit them out. I tried hard not to laugh.

"Listen lady! If I wanted to be popping pills I would have become a pharmacist by now-" Michael stopped yelling at the nurse long enough to notice I was there. He waved with his bad arm and instantly regretted it.

He winced in pain. I was about to go up to him a plant a kiss on his red lips before I heard sirens in the distance. The nurse quickly wheeled Michael out of the room and I was right at her heels.

"Take him. He's worse than a baby." The nurse said to a waiting paramedic. Michael stuck out his tongue and flipped her off with both of his hands. I rolled my eyes.

"Can I ride with him?" I asked the medics as they put him in the ambulance. They nodded and I happily hopped in.

One ambulance ride later...

"So...do guys ever get creeped out by the ambulances that people died in?" Michael asked as the medics wheeled him into the ER. The hospital was packed but it seemed like Michael had a ticket for first in line because a team doctors quickly came in and swept him away.

I stayed in the waiting and for a moment I felt that we were finally safe. From here the doctors would probably call the police and that meant a one way ticket back home.

I smiled at the thought of seeing my parents again. I imagined my mom cooking up spaghetti and her famous fresh squeezed lemonade. Just thinking about that made me thirsty especially the lemonade part. I saw a water fountain nearby so I stood up and made my way towards it. The water was cold and refreshing.

Once I finally got myself to pull away, I quickly made my way to the waiting room. I was relieved to find my seat empty. As I sat down the man next to me shifted but I couldn't see his face seeing that he was reading a newspaper. I ignored though.

"Hello, Alaina." The man said from behind his newspaper. My heart stopped, ripped out of my chest, and started running. The man put down his paper and I saw the round, scruffy face of Principal Roger Moreno.
