Cruising Alaska - Ketchikan

Ketchikan is one stop on an Alaskan cruise. This article discusses things you can do while there.
The first time someone mentioned cruising Alaska to me, I couldn't imagine why I would want to. There are so many options for cruising, why would one choose a cruise to Alaska. Well, seven cruises to Alaska later I would have to say I understand the fascination.

Alaska has a beauty that cannot be done justice with words. You have to see it to fully appreciate it. There is nothing like seeing wildlife in its natural surroundings. The first time I went to Alaska I couldn't believe all the eagles. They were everywhere and seeing them in this way was only one of the many benefits of an Alaskan cruise.

A cruise of Alaska usually goes through what is known as the Inside Passage. There three most popular ports are Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skayway. You will also visit one of Alaska's glaciers, which in themselves make a cruise to Alaska memorable. In this article I will talk about what to see in Ketchikan. In future articles I will take about Juneau and Skagway.

Ketchikan

Ketchikan is unique for having more totem poles then anywhere else in the world. Like many towns in Alaska, it was the Yukon Gold Rush that helped the city grow. Between 8000 and 15000 people live in Ketchikan, more in the summer than in the winter. (According to the last census of 2000)

some of the items unique to Ketchikan are:

Dolly's House: This was the boraello of Dolly, a prostitute. It is located on Creek Street, which was known as the Red Light District until 1953.

Sightseeing by Seaplane: This was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences I had in Alaska. Taking a seaplane allowed me to see a side of Alaska I couldn't have seen any other way. And the seaplane ride was fun too.

City Tour: I would always recommend that a first-time visitor take the city tour. You will learn where everything is and can then decide what you want to go back and see. You will also learn the history of the city and visit all the tourist attractions.

Shopping: Ketchikan is considered to have Alaska's best selection of watches, gemstone jewelry, and brand names. There are plenty of souvenir stores and a Del Sol, known for its color-changing t-shirts. When all else fails, you can catch the free shuttle to the WalMart store.

There is, of course, lots more to do in Ketchikan. This article only covers some of the things I have done and can recommend. Cruising Alaska is an experience you will never forget. Why not consider it for your next family vacation?
