Keeping the Balance - Ch. 4

I'm tired, cold, and not feeling very well. I hope your snow filled day is better than mine. (if you have snow)
"Don't you have a girl taking care of all of you guys? Anyone?" I asked Kaden and he glared at me.

"No. It's just me. Tim fools around too much," Kaden left and slammed his bedroom shut.

"He's just mad," George came back in the kitchen, the mud still in place.

"He's just mad cuz he has to take care of us three. Tim, Mac, and me all by himself," George said and I sighed.

"Didn't he tell you to get the mud off yourself?" I asked George and he blushed.

"Yeah, but it takes a ton of scrubbing," George admitted and I held out my hand.

"C'mon," I encouraged him and he grabbed my hand.

"Where is your bathroom?" I asked him and he jerked his thumb to the last door.

I led him in and gasped.

"It's a mess," I said and George blushed again.

"It tried to clean it once," George laughed after he got over his embarrassment.

"That must have been an adventure," I laughed with him and spotted a clean rag.

I removed all the crap in the sink and rinsed the rag.

"Sit on the toilet," I commanded and he did.

"I never had a mom to do all this stuff for me," George said glumly while I wiped his face.

"I'm sorry," I said softly as I got the rest of the mud off his face.

"I bet you're a real good mom," he told me and smiled. I just nodded my head, unable to do anything else.

"Thanks Alice," he waved and dashed out of the bathroom.

Kaden was standing in the hallway looking at me as if I had grown two heads.

"I better get you home, huh?" he asked me and I nodded silently.

"Thanks for...," he stopped unable to get the words out.

"Sure, anytime," I forced a smile as he led me to the car.

"Maybe I could hang out with you guys sometime," I suggested and his face light up.

"Yeah. That would be dandy," he laughed and I got in the car.

He dropped me off at my apartment and I left.

"I'll see you around?" I asked and he nodded.

"Yeah," he grinned at me and I handed him a white sheet of paper.

"Bye," I called, as I ran up to my apartment, not waiting to see his expression.

"Where have you been?" Maggy asked me as I got in the apartment.

"It's a long story Mags, and I'm a walking zombie," I yawned and she laughed.

"I expect a full report tomorrow. Night, darling!" she said as I headed to my bedroom.

I fell on the bed and imagined a sweet six year old's face, with missing teeth, covered in mud, and missing a mother.
