Katthak - A Culture

A Word about Katthak as a dance and as a culture
Indian Dance (Nrutya)
Indian dance is rhythemic & a play of emotions.
The "Dwarikamahatmya" named novel tells us many things about Nrutya.
There are seven types of Nrutyas from different states:-

Bharatnatyam or also called as Dasiattam, this is mostly done at Tamilnadu & Tanjawar states
Kuchipudi this type of nrutya is from Andhrapradesh.
Odisi this type of Nrutya is from Orrisa.
Manipuri this type is from Manipur
Kathakalli & Mohiniattam this type of nrutya is from Kerala. In this Nrutya Mohiniattam is done by females while Kathakali is done by males.
Yakshagan this type of nrutya is from at Karnataka.
Kathak is from Uttarpradesh.
"Katha kahe so Kathak kehlawe" is the simple explanation of ‘Kathak’.That means Kathak Nrutya tells a story.
In the old age the ‘Kushilav’named (region) people teach to dance to Devdasis on Old stories.

In the Kathak there are the types of houses called as "Gharana" who have there own style. These are:-
Jaipur Gharan
Lakhnou Gharana
Banaras Gharana
There are the four types of Vedas such as
Rigveda
Yajurvaveda
Samveda
Atharvaveda

But there is also fifth one veda is ‘Natyaveda’ borned from all the above four Vedas.
Rigveda is about stories i.e. Katha
Yajurvaveda is about dancing i.e. Nrutya.
Samveda is about Music i.e. Sangeet.
Atrvaveda is about emotions i.e. Rasa & Bhav.
We can see the mixing of the entire above thing in ‘Natyaveda’.
Bharatnatyam is sread all over the world by Bharatrishi’s hundred sons thats why it is called as Bhratnatyam.

There is very much difference between Nrutta & Nrutya.
Nrutta: In sunskrit there is a tale about Nrutta that is ‘Bhavabhinayhinam nruttamitya vidhiyate'. That means there is neither any emotions nor a act just to move your body on the rhythem is called as ‘Nrutta’
Nrutya: Again a sunskrit tale about Nrutya is ‘Rasabhavvytrajanadiyuktam Nrutyamitya vidhiyate’

That means when a drama or act & Nrutta get together that time Nrutya occurs.
To sing a song to tell the meaning of that song by doing different Mudras by hand,
To show the emotions in that song by the movement of eyes & by legs to be rhythmic. To do all these things together is called as Nrutya.
