Katie Couric, Cougar Extraordinaire, Addresses Princeton Grads
Katie Couric addressed the graduates of Princeton University on Monday, and came up with some bizarre references during the speech.
Katie Couric, who lately seems to look every day (and then some) of her 52 years, addressed graduating students at Princeton University at the school’s annual Class Day on Monday. The topics she addressed were varied, ranging from her newfound reputation as a "cougar" – attached to her when she began dating a 33-year-old in 2007 – to the current job market and Michelle Obama.
Flattering the students at Princeton, whose mascot is a tiger, Couric noted during the address, "I’ve been called a cougar lately, but today, I’m very happy to be an honorary Tiger instead!" She went on to take a slight jab at Alaska Governor Sarah Palin when she said, "Coming here was a real no brainer! After all, I can see New Jersey from my house!" Couric’s address wasn’t all jokes, however, as she also brought up the tough job market that new graduates (even those from Princeton) will face. Noted Couric, "As you head out into this daunting job market, at least you have many illustrious alumni lighting the way."
Couric then noted Michele Obama as an example of one such alum: "She was class of 1985, and now she’s wowing them in Washington." Moral of the story? Graduate from Princeton and marry the president of the United States and you too can be someone special! Speaking to the Princeton grads as though they were coming from a kegger (or at least trying to), Couric went on, "Don’t be a hater. Princeton has taught you to think critically, to approach things with a healthy dose of skepticism. And that’s a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say. Rise above the collegial nastiness and instead celebrate excellence." Martha Stewart? Really? Oh well, seems that even dating a man nearly 20 years her junior won’t teach the aging Couric how to properly communicate with the younger crowd.
