Kate Winslet, Others Escape Fire in British Virgin Islands
Kate Winslet and members of Richard Branson’s family escaped a burning guest house of the Virgin Group CEO’s over the weekend.
A variety of guests who were staying at Richard Branson’s estate in the Caribbean got a scare over the weekend when a fire leveled one of the homes on the property during the night. Roughly 20 people, including Kate Winslet and her children, were staying in an eight-bedroom guest house on Necker, the Virgin Group CEO’s private island in the BVI. Branson himself was staying in another house located just a short distance from the guest home, though there was no damage to that house.
Along with Branson in the undamaged home were his wife, Joan and his 25-year-old son, Sam. According to Branson, the fire the destroyed his guest house began at around 4 A.M., apparently the result of heavy winds and a lightning storm. Branson’s son Sam was instrumental in assisting guests get out of the home that was engulfed in flames. Branson’s mother, who is 90 years old, and his 29-year-old daughter Holly were all able to get out of the house safely.
Said Branson in a statement, "Kate Winslet, her boyfriend and her family were there and Holly and some of her friends were also staying. My mother was there and they managed to get her out and she is fine." Remnants of the fire were still in evidence yesterday, as flames popped up from time to time. Branson described the house as being "totally destroyed" and noted, "My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs, which is very sad." Branson planned to rebuild the house as soon as possible.
