Reportedly West jumped up on stage and made a huge deal about not winning the Best Video Award. He was beat out by Justice vs. Simian’s "We Are Your Friends." West reportedly said, "[My video] cost a million dollars. Pamela Anderson was in it. I was jumping across canyons and sh--." His "profanity laced tirade" shocked the audience. West also said, "If I don’t win, the awards show loses credibility. I had the best video. ‘Touch the Sky’ was a great moment in TV." Does anyone care anymore that he did win best Hip-Hop artist?
West went on to rant to reporters after the show, "I haven’t seen [the Justice vs. Simian video]. Possibly it could have been quite good, but no way better than ‘Touch the Sky.’ That is complete bullsh--. I paid a million. Obviously it’s not all about money, but the response it got transcended everything, it really made great TV." West continued, "I did it to be the king of all videos and I wanted to walk home with that award." Well, he has a very high opinion of himself now doesn’t he?
West has always thought highly of himself and his work. In 2004, he lost the favorite breakthrough artist award to Gretchen Wilson at the American Music Awards. He later told reporters he was "robbed" and "I was the best new artist this year." Around this year’s Grammy awards, West also made the statement he’s "really have a problem" if his album Late Registration didn’t win album of the year. He was beat out by U2’s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.
