The Biebs seemed to handle himself pretty well during his stint as host of Saturday Night Live over the weekend. He’s not quite Justin Timberlake in that department, but he has the potential to grow into a more polished player if he’s given more opportunities. As it stands, Bieber and the SNL writers did a decent job of keeping him involved and took the opportunity to address Bieber’s recent weed scandal, in which he was photographed smoking pot in a California hotel room.
In a sketch called The Miley Cyrus Show, Bieber appeared as Miley’s biggest fan, complete with wig and full slacker gear. His character started firing some shots at Justin Bieber and eventually noted that he "heard" that Bieber "got caught smoking weed" and that "he’s never gonna do it again." While the crowd cheered their apparent approval, the Miley character quickly dismissed the third-person apology with "yeah, right. Me too!"
Obviously, Bieber’s pot incident(s) have dinged his image a bit, but he’s young enough to easily overcome them by simply staying out of trouble for a while. Fortunately for him - and other stars of his generation - he has outlets available to him outside music that should make things a little easier. Unlike performers of previous generations, who were largely channeled into music or television or movies, stars of today can freely move among all three platforms, and many have found success with that approach. With the popularity of music competition shows like American Idol and The Voice, there are always worst-case fallbacks for performers like Bieber.
If Britney Spears was able to overcome her years-long public meltdown, including losing custody of her children and countless episodes of bizarre public behavior, to end up as a featured judge on The X Factor, Bieber has absolutely nothing to worry about.
