Just Another Day - Chapter 9

Melanie's world seems to fall apart. Comment please!
Melanie's POV

I answered the phone, feeling like I was going to throw up.

"Hello?" I answered shakily.

"Hello, is this Melanie Schrader?" I recognized the voice of my father's doctor.

"This is she. What's wrong?" I was terrified to hear the answer.

"Miss Schrader, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but your father has taken a turn for the worse. I need you to come to the clinic right away." I almost dropped my phone. I took everything I had to say ok. I turned to Sandra.

"Sandra, we have to go. My dad. He's not ok." Tears were running down my face for a second time that night.

"Yeah, let's go. I'll drive you there." She looked so sad.

When we got there, I ran into the clinic as fast as I could. I told the receptionist my name, and she told me my dad's room number. I ran to his room. When I got there, I slowed and walked cautiously into the room.

He looked so frail and weak. He had no color in his face. When he heard me come in, he glanced my way and weakly smiled. I burst into tears.

Sobbing, I made my way to the chair next to him.

"Umm, I'm going to wait outside. Call me if you need me Mel." I almost forgot about Sandra.

"Thanks Sandra, I will." With that, she walked out.

I turned to my sick father. Wondering how everything went so wrong. A million questions were swirling around in my mind. But when I looked at his face, I started sobbing. I sobbed so violently, I was shaking. Soon, I calmed down.

"Baby girl, don't cry. I'm sorry you have to see me like this." He wiped my cheek with his hand.

"Oh daddy. This can't be happening. You can't leave me. Not now. I need you more than ever." I grabbed his hand, and cried softly into it.

"What do you mean Melanie?" He asked questioningly.

"Well, before the doctor called me, I caught David kissing his ex girlfriend's dad. So I punched her." He looked shocked.

"I know I shouldn't have. But I was so angry. So I told him we were over. And to be honest, I wanted him to fight for me. But he didn't. He just accepted what I said I wanted. Daddy, he didn't fight for me.." I cried even harder then.

"Oh honey, if he loves you, he will. And I'm certain he does. You just wait and see." As he said this, the doctor knocked on the door.

Seeing my year streaked face, he smiled sympathetically at me. And then he talked about my dad's health.

"I'm very sorry Mr.Schrader, but you've stopped responding to all of your treatments. And all I can do is make you as comfortable as possible. You don't have much time left." He looked sad for us. And with that, he left me and my father alone.

"Melanie, don't be sad. It's my time. I want you to know that I love you more than anything in the world, and I'll always be with you."

"I love you too, daddy. I wish you didn't have to go." Overwhelmed with sadness, I let everything go. I sobbed and sobbed until I couldn't cry anymore.

I must have fallen asleep because I woke up resting my head in my father's hospital bed. I could hear the beeping of machines and nurses talking quietly outside. Glancing to my right, there was a note on the bed.

Melanie,
I've gone home. You never called me, so I came looking for you. I found you asleep and I didn't want to disturb you. If you need me to come get you or anything, I'm only a phone call away.
Your friend, Sandra.

How sweet. I went to stash it into my purse when I noticed a figure standing in the doorway. When I looked up, it was David. He seemed hesitant, but made his way into the room. I tried my best to glare at him, but I couldn't handle it.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, before bursting into tears.

David's POV

After she asked why I was there, she started crying. I immediately went to her side. And surprisingly, she let me hug her. I did my best to comfort her, not trying to wake her dad. And soon, Melanie calmed down.

"What are you doing here?" She repeated. She looked at me with a tear streaked face. My heart broke for her.

"I'm here to apologize. For everything. I want you to know that I have no feelings for Melissa. And that I absolutely love you. You have no idea how much. And I want to apologize for just giving up like I did. I shouldn't have. I should have fought for you, because I love you." She still seemed hesitant.

"Why didn't you fight for me?" She whispered.

"Because at that moment, I believed that you deserved someone better than me. Someone who would never hurt you, the way I did. I was consumed with guilt over what happened." I replied honestly.

"Well, that's stupid." She scoffed. I looked at her shocked.

"Why is that stupid?"

"Because I only want you. I don't care if you think I deserve better. I only want you. And I know we all make mistakes, we're human. And I know you didn't intentionally hurt me." She smiled weakly at me and grabbed my hand.

I smiled at her, and pulled her in to kiss her. When she pulled away, I noticed her dad was awake.

"Hey Melanie, could you give me and David a few minutes please?" She looked puzzled. But did as her father asked. She kissed his cheek, and gave me a quick kiss before leaving.

"I see you kept your promise." He smiled at me.

"I'm guessing she told you everything that happened. And after feeling guilty, I remembered what you made me promise. And I love her too much to let her go."

"Well, that's good. I'm glad you came. She was real torn up about you. She really loves you, ya know."

I smiled. "And I love her. Thank you, sir."

Soon after our conversation, Melanie came back.

"How did you know I was here David?" Melanie asked.

"Sandra called me and told me. She said she didn't care what happened, and that I needed to get here because she said you needed me."

She smiled. "She knows me so well. I'm glad she called you."

And for the next few hours, we all hung out together. And it wasn't all that bad. But soon her dad was getting tired. And he ordered Melanie to go home. So that's where we found ourselves going in the wee hours in the morning.

When we got there, her mom wasn't home. And Melanie didn't seem to care. As I was about to say goodbye, she grabbed my arm.

"No, please stay. I don't want to be alone." She started pulling me upstairs.

When we got to her room, I laid on her bed while she took a shower. And after she was done, she turned out the light and crawled in next to me. We fell asleep that night in each other's arms.
