Jordan's King Abdullah Removes Cabinet Amid Street Protests

The political and social upheaval that is sweeping the Middle East has found its way to Jordan, another close ally of the United States.
Jordan's King Abdullah removed his entire sitting Cabinet on Tuesday in response to street protests in the Arab nation. The protests in Jordan are being inspired by those in Egypt and previously in Tunisia. The Tunisian people successfully ousted their oppressive government and the people of Egypt appear to be on the verge of doing the same. As people begin to realize that peaceful revolution is possible, more countries will move in that direction. Of course, ever such movement is fraught with danger, requiring only one stubborn leader and a trigger-happy military to turn a peaceful demonstration into a bloody massacre.

As things escalated in Egypt, the U.S. and the Obama administration no doubt saw the writing on the wall - that this type of movement was going to spread quickly across the Muslim world. Once the scales tip in the favor of revolution, there is little that can be done to stop it.

The move by Kind Abdullah of Jordan appears to be an attempt to appease the people, but it's unclear whether or not removing and replacing the sitting cabinet will suffice. At the very least, it would seem that the people of Jordan, in much the same way as the people in Egypt and Tunisia, are demanding significant and immediate social, political and economic reforms.

Many of the countries in the Middle East suffer from a great disparity of wealth, with the elite enjoying luxuries beyond imagination as a result of decades of oil riches, while the majority of the countries live below the poverty line.
