Joe Biden's Puppy - So What If It's From a Breeder?

Some are angry that the vice president-elect chose his dog from a breeder rather than a shelter. Should it matter as long as little Champ has a good home?
As many have heard through various news outlets, vice president-elect recently got himself a German Shepherd puppy from a breeder rather than adopting a shelter dog. After the news broke, criticism came in from animal activists all over because the puppy, now named Champ thanks to input from his grandchildren, was bought rather than adopted.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for adoption. My three cats, two rabbits, and two guinea pigs were adopted from rescues and I got my chinchilla from a family who could no longer care for her. I support anyone who decides to adopt a pet or help someone who needs to rehome a pet they can no longer care for. Despite this, I don't find it immoral for a person to purchase a dog from a reputable breeder.

The soon-to-be vice president was referred to this breeder from a friend, and he looked into the facility before choosing a puppy from there. Reports seemed to indicate that little Champ came from a small-time breeder who wants only what is best for the dogs. He didn't get Champ from a puppy mill that cares only about profit rather than quality pets and the welfare of the pups and mothers.

I've seen the same sort of backlash on various forums on the Internet when someone says the bought an animal from a pet store. They say, "If you buy from a pet store you're only encouraging them to keep selling animals and abusing them!" I understand their logic. They think that if pet stores stop or scale back on selling animals, there won't be as much need for rescues and millions of animals will find homes rather than face euthanasia.

Rather than shun all breeders and pet shops, though, why not support those who do take good care of their animals and are trying to send home quality pets to their new owners? While adoption is always a great first option, if you don't have a nearby rescue or humane society that has a particular breed of dog or an exotic critter like a chinchilla or a hedgehog, you shouldn't turn down a breeder or pet shop if they appear to have the animals' best interests in mind.

I also have another, albeit more humorous, theory as to why Joe Biden chose to buy from a breeder first, though.

I can just imagine it now... Mrs. Biden saying, "Joe, we're only having one dog. Just one!" Joe, after seeing the public supporting Obama to adopt, figured that if he bought a puppy from a breeder there would be some public backlash. Shortly after the story (and the backlash) came out, the Bidens announced they would also be getting a shelter dog, probably a Golden Retriever. It makes me wonder if Joe planned this whole thing knowing that if people complained about not adopting the puppy that he'd just have to get another dog from a shelter to appease them!

...Okay, so perhaps my imagination has run a little too wild, or I'm merely imagining what I would do if I were in Joe Biden's shoes since I'm a big pet lover.

Either way, let's just be happy that little Champ and his future playmate will have a great home. That's the most important thing of all, really. As long as the animals have loving homes that care for them, should we really complain about where they came from?
