Jodie Foster Defends Mel Gibson, Calling him "Complex"

Mel Gibson stars in Jodie Foster’s newest film, "The Beaver," and she defends her friend – though not his actions – calling him "complex."
Jodie Foster, Hollywood royalty after having been around for so long and having worked as an actress, writer and director, was in Cannes for the European premiere of "The Beaver," a film she directs that stars Mel Gibson. While there, she defended Gibson, who has been in the news over the past several years for all the wrong reasons. Asked about Gibson, Foster noted that he would be at the red carpet premiere, but "he won’t be talking." Given his recent history, that may be for the best, but Foster supported him – to an extent.

Said Foster of Gibson’s behavior over the past 4 or 5 years, "I can’t excuse Mel’s behavior. We are all responsible for our own behavior. But I do know the man that I know, and he has been a friend for many, many years. He is somebody who is probably the most loved actor in Hollywood." Foster expounded further, saying that Gibson is a good friend and is "kind and loyal and thoughtful and I can speak hours on the phone with him talking about life. He is complex and I appreciate his complexity."

In her newest film, Gibson plays a depressed man who comes up with a very unusual means of dealing with his depression. As for casting Gibson, Foster had no qualms about it, noting, "He was first on my list. He really understood the character in a way that was extraordinary. He was willing to go to such a deep place and expose himself and talk about something he knows a lot about – struggling, wanting to transform himself."
