Well, it’s finally official. After flirting with the notion of directing Disney’s "Star Wars Episode VII," J.J. Abrams indicated several months ago that it would not be a project he would be working on. At the time, he cited his involvement with the Star Trek film franchise as a primary reason, and also noted that he’d really prefer to go to see the film as a fan rather than as someone who was involved in the process from the top level.
That’s all changed now, however, as it has been announced that Abrams will, in fact, direct the new Star Wars film. He has from the beginning been one of the fan favorites to take the job, so this is probably going to make many fans very happy. Noted Abrams back in December of last year: "[Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands. There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to 'Star Trek,' and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."
Among the others who were being considered for the prestigious post were Ben Affleck and Jon Favreau. The next Star Wars film, written by Michael Arndt, will be in theaters in 2015. Abram’s next installment of Star Trek, titled "Into Darkness" will be out in theaters in May. No word if that causes angst amongst fans of the respective franchises, but only time will tell how it all works out.
