Jet Ski Safety Tips

Most people who love adventure and thrill in life are big fans of water sports. There are various water sports which people love, but nothing beats the excitement of riding the super fast Jet Ski. Riding a Jet Ski is one of the most amazing things that a person can do on water, but if not handled properly this fast ride is enough to cause serious injuries. Jet Ski is actually a brand name given to a personal watercraft (PWC) which is manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Japan. Though many people call it an easy and fun machine to handle, people who have ridden Jet Skis before know the power of the machine and never advise beginners to drive it at high speeds without safety gear.

Precautions to consider while Riding a Jet Ski

It's almost summer and most people would head out to the shores for some fun and water games. There are high chances that people would also go and give Jet Skis a try. It doesn't matter if the rider is doing this for the first time or has done it before, Jet Skis shouldn't be ridden if the rider doesn't know all the necessary safety norms.

Wear the Necessary Safety Equipment
All riders must wear a proper fitted US Coast Guard approved flotation device. Drivers should also attach the engine stop lanyard to their wrist at all times. Why? If some uncanny circumstances occur and the rider falls off the Jet Ski, the engine will automatically shut off when the lanyard is pulled from the kill switch. It's also advised to have a fire extinguisher on board in case engine suffers problems and a fire occurs.

Keep Your Eyes Open
It's a good idea to stay alert at all times when you are riding a Jet Ski. Drivers should be very careful about other ships and boats. 95% of Jet Ski collisions happen when the rider is taking a very sharp turn at high speed. Be very careful on holidays and weekends as traffic on sea is the highest on these days. Also make sure the rider is not under the influence of alcohol and or drugs while driving a Jet Ski.

Take a Course
People who have no experience in handling a PWC or a Jet Ski should first take a crash course in riding such machines. There are many courses which are available and people do undertake them so that they can ride a Jet Ski like a professional and avoid any crashes.

Keep Distance
It's advised that Jet Ski riders maintain a distance of at least 70 feet from other PWCs in the water. Remember coming close to another boat or Jet Ski can be reckless and will certainly cause collisions.

Age Limit
No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to drive a Jet Ski alone. Manufactures recommend the age limit to be 16 but not all state laws agree with this recommendation. In most states, individuals younger than 18 are prohibited from riding a Jet Ski alone. However, they can ride a Jet Ski with a professional seated behind.

Ride in Daylight
Riding a Jet Ski before sunrise or after sunset is strictly prohibited. Why? Because there's not enough sunlight and these machines don't have their own navigation lights. So when the sun goes down, riders are requested switch off their machines and return to the shore.

Driving a Jet Ski is fun, but it's also necessary to first learn the machine like a professional and then perform all the exciting stunts. Also don't go Jet Skiing without knowing the rules and regulations of the US Coast Guard in the respective state.
