Jesus Era Remains Found

Researchers have found remains which are from the first century, the time of Jesus.
Pieces of a burial shroud have been discovered in Jerusalem which belong to the time of Jesus. Researchers believe that this is the first such find from the era of Jesus. It was discovered in a tomb complex right at the edge of the older part of Jerusalem. Besides being a first, this find is considered very important due to the fact that these parts of the world are not very convenient for the preservation of organic material because of the high humidity levels present most of the time.

Excavation Director Shimon Gibson said that the remains of this particular man was covered in cloth which consisted of different wrappings for the body and the head, something that was consistent with burial practices of that very era. He also added that extensive research has proven that the weave of this cloth was simple, and much different from the more complex Shroud of Turin's. The Shroud of Turin a burial cloth that bears the image of Jesus, and was a thing of the Middle Ages.

The discovery is in a location which has been described in the Bible as the "Field of Blood", and is near the area where Judas, the apostle who went on to betray Jesus, committed suicide. Molecular and DNA testing confirmed that the man was suffering from tuberculosis and leprosy. Leprosy is one of the earliest disease known to mankind. Hebrew University Professor Mark Spigelman said, "It is likely the shrouded man died from tuberculosis, and its presence in other remains found at the site suggest the significant impact, social diseases such as tuberculosis had on society from the low socioeconomic groups up to the more affluent families, such as Tomb the Shroud in first-century Jerusalem."
