At the end of a long week of book promotion tours that undoubtedly are meant to position him for a 2016 presidential run, Jeb Bush discussed a variety of issues with the media. Among them was his support of a conditional path to citizenship and, of course, his denial that he's interested in seeking the White House in three years.
He noted, "I don't want to begin the process until it is the proper time to do so." Well, maybe that's not an outright denial, but he seems very hesitant to talk about the issue, instead preferring to blast President Obama and work on testing some ideas for a would-be platform if he decides it's the right time to run.
When David Gregory pushed him about the issue of running in 2016, Bush responded, "Man, you guys are crack addicts. You're really obsessed with all this politics." As for Mitt Romney losing the election, which gives Bush a chance to run 4 years earlier than he otherwise would have, he notes of the Obama strategy, "I think the basic part of his campaign was that those that were successful weren’t paying their fair share, even though we have incredibly high taxes for high income Americans. I think he ran a campaign of them and us. And it was quite effective, that somehow the Republicans don’t care about the large number of people."
Bush didn't elaborate too much, and certainly didn't point out that, aside from pushing a lot of money out of the federal treasury and to recipients of various sorts, Obama is also tied to big money in much the same way Republicans are. It will be interesting to see exactly when Bush does decide to announce that he'll run for president in 2016.
