South of Cuba, and west of Hispaniola, the country of Jamaica is barely larger than Hawaii. Jamaica's capital is Kingston and its landscape is mostly highland, with higher elevations in the Blue Mountains to the east. The soil on the island contains limestone, make agricultural efforts difficult. Rainwater does not stay on the surface, but rather soaks into the stone quickly. The islands have some larger rivers, but the Black. River is the only one navigable. Jamaica enjoys great vegetation diversity, although clearing has taken place.
