Late Satyajit Ray, a famous Indian filmmaker, once quoted Jaisalmer Fort as Sonar Kella(The Golden Fortress) in his film (Sonar Kella, 1974). The writer as truly recognized this marvelous fort, which highlight Rajputana legacy at best. It is located in Jaisalmer city in Rajasthan and is considered as one of the largest fort all over the world.

Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati Rajput ruler. It stands on the stark stretches of the great Thar Desert, on the Trikuta Hill. On sunny days, its huge yellow sandstone walls shimmer, while it catches honey-gold color. This might be the reason that sightseers call it as the Golden Fort of Rajasthan.

Architecturally, Jaisalmer Fort consists of three layer of wall. The outer layer(lower) is composed of solid stone blocks and the second layer(middle) goes around the fort. From the inner wall( third) Rajput warriors used to throw boiling water, oil, massive blocks of rocks on the enemies, when they got trapped between the second and the third walls.

The Havelis in the fort are the must-visit areas. History says that, these large houses were built by rich merchants of the erstwhile Rajasthan. All of them are made out of golden sandstone, marvelous floors and long-list rooms. Some date back to more then 100 years, while many are built in 15th century. The door, celling, windows, archways and balconies showcases the fine carvings of wood, at are as old as the havelis.
