Jain Temples in India

Palitana Temples

Palitana temples are one of the most revered destination for devout Jain. The cluster of 863 shrines are nestled atop on Shetrunjaya hills, located in the western state of Gujarat. It is said that they were built between 11th and 12th centuries and various beliefs lie submerged underneath the temples. Devotees belief to take all hazards, so as to climb over 3500 steps from the town.

Dilwara Temples

Constructed sometime from 11th to 13th century AD, Dilwara temples is situated about 2 ½ km away from Mount Abu hill-station in Rajasthan. All the five temples is made out of marbles and possess the stunning architectural excellence. The worthy name to mention are:
Vimal Vasahi (Shri Adi Nathji Temple)
Luna Vasahi (Shri Nemi Nathji Temple)
Pithalhar (Shri Rishabh Deoji Temple)
Khartar Vasahi (Shri Parhav Nathji Temple)
Mahaveer Swami (Shri Mahaveer Swamiji Temple).
Interestingly, the temples are named after the villages in which they are located.

Ranakpur

The Aravali range in Rajasthan is blessed with one of the most important Jain pilgrimage center-Ranakpur. It was built in 15th century under the regime of Rajput Rana Kumbha and beholds architectural beauty at its best. There are 1, 444 intricately carved columns and the basement measures about 48, 000 sq. feet area. The main temple of the area is a Chaumukh(four-faced) and is dedicated to Shri Adinath.

Falna Ranakpur

As the name indicates, a Jain Golden Temple sprays holy smoke in Falna, Rajasthan. It is one of the first temples, that was constructed by pilgrims of the Jain community. It is said that once the ladies of Jain community has donated about 90 kg gold for the idolization of the temple dome and deity.

Sravanabelagola

Jainism and its culture can be well experienced with a visit to Sravananelagola, located 100 kms from Mysore. The place is famous for world's tallest free-standing statue of Gomateshwara. Devotees also pay tribute in the name of Lord Bahubali. The monolithic stones of the massive image receive great attention during the grand festival- Maha Masthaka Abhisheka. Besides, there are a number of Jain temples and monasteries which carries great historical and religious significance for pilgrims.

Jains can also make a religious trip to Kalugumalai and Sittannavasal in Tamil Nadu, Hati-gumpha in Orissa, Ajitnath Temple in Gujarat etc.
