Jack Russell Training to Stop Chewing

Surely, a cute and well behaved jack russell is pictured in your mind while you are anticipating for the arrival of your new pet. However, it can be so frustrating to think that instead of having your dream pet, you realized that you come home with a four-legged little monster who finds delight in grinding various household items. So what to do with this? Noticeably severe cases may incite the owner to give up the pet to the nearest animal shelter or to anybody who is willing to take the dog. Sad but true isn't it? But there wouldn't be problems like this one if only proper jack russell training has been provided.

Dogs are curious creatures. Anything that is new or attractive to them can't escape their prying minds. But how can this creature investigate if what he got are four legs and no hands? Naturally they would bark at, sniff and of course, chew to check on things.

Chewing is not considered an issue if only they are chewing the appropriate things. But if you return home one day to find a damaged throw pillow or a torn living room curtain, then it's time to make a move to stop this problem. The first step is to take responsibility for your belongings. Clothing, shoes, books and other things should be kept out of your dog's reach. Or in other words, dogs must have limited access to areas where these things are located. Allowing him to run freely around the house is not a very good idea when chewing problem is existing.

If caught in the act of chewing, create a noise loud enough to interrupt him but not too loud to scare him to death. Take the stuff he is chewing and replace it with an acceptable chew toy. Praise him when he accepts the toy you gave. Have at least two or three chew toys you can rotate to keep your pet interested. When buying a chew toy, make sure that it does not break easily and does not contain parts small enough for your pet to swallow. Bear in mind to ensure the safety of your pet even if he is just lazing around the corner or in jack russell training session.

Old clothing, shoes or socks are not considered dog toys so don't offer him those things. It will only confuse him considering the fact that dogs can't distinguish old things from new ones.

Of course, exercise, lots of mental stimulation and lots of attention from the owner will also help.
