It's Never Puppy Love - Chapter 3

I'm lost.
The lunch bell took forever to ring in my ears. I didn’t hear a word that Ms. Pusey said, the only sound I heard was my stomach rumbling. Then it rang… the annoying sound had never seemed so sweet. I grabbed Jade’s arm and we practically ran out, bumping into Shannon and Kathleen on the way out. "We’ve been waiting for hours!!" Kathleen said as we came out. We shot her a, "What- the- heck?" Look and she started laughing. Smoothly, we made our way to the cafeteria arm in arm, laughing gently.

"So what do we want?" Shannon said, glancing at the nearby menu.

"I feel like pizza, but SIX slices!" Kathleen said. "I want pizza too!" Jade and I said at the same time. We giggled and turned to Shannon. "Yep! So let’s just buy 2 pepperoni pizzas and split them. And we all want chips and flavored waters right?" Shannon questioned, we all nodded in reply. "Oh and don’t forget the rice pudding." Jade said looking back at the menu board. Then suddenly the cafeteria went silent, with only the soft occasional "look!" or "Is that a new shirt he’s got on." or "I like his hair that way." We all turned in the direction of the heads and saw four tall and well-built boys stepping through the crowd of girls. Then three faces registered. The first one was Brandon, Jade’s brother. Shannon gently nudged me and smiled unconsciously, obviously she had seen him. The second was the idiot I had bumped into earlier on. I scoffed and quickly changed my direction of sight and my eyes fell on number three… Jason.

As if he knew I was watching, he twisted his head and saw me, even through the crowd. He didn’t smile, but his eyes changed into a much softer and silkier aquamarine, smiling for him. I blushed uncontrollably. Then I felt Jade’s glare and turned to face her, but she only grinned and kept on watching the show the boys were putting on for us. I turned back hiding my laughter and realized that I hadn’t figured out number four, the biggest and obvious leader of the pack. "NEXT!" I returned to reality with an annoying, high-pitched voice screaming in my ears. I turned to see a very fat lunch lady glaring at me with one of her eyes bigger than the other. I grimaced and tapped Shannon on her shoulder, awakening her from her day-dream. She smiled softly and we placed the orders. After getting our lunch we maneuvered our way through the growing crowd, trying to get to the outside benches, but it was proving to be quite difficult.

In the cafeteria was as crazy as usual, the loud girls and the grouchy guys. Every day it got more and more annoying. Then someone grabbed my ass. I turned around rapidly to see who had done it, but there were so many hands and faces, it was hard to tell. Then I caught a glimpse of wavy hair and the tight tank top I had seen 2 periods ago. I looked more carefully and sighed. It was her. I was right on time too, as she was looking directly at me, her cheeks red and her pink lips curled into a brief smile. I was about to smile back when her eyes drifted away from mine and her head turned sharply towards her friend. I sighed again and kept on walking. We sat down at our usual tables, the girls began to drift away and the boys’ eyes went back to their food. Then I heard her voice, squeaky and high and irritating. April Brianne, the biggest hoe the planet had ever experienced other than the idiots that are dumb enough to follow her. I leaned back ready for her foolishness.

"Okay girls… sorry dudes not you today {giggle}. For those who are unaware of my status here, I am April current cheerleading captain of the Panthers. And we are looking for some new girls to show us what you’re made of at the try-outs this Friday. So you only have 2 days left to work on your handsprings and backflips {giggle}." April boomed through the cafeteria. Everyone had stopped just to hear her speak. Kathleen scoffed in disgust and continued walking through the slide doors that led outside, and the rest of us were very happy to follow. Her face just made my stomach turn. As I walked outside, I felt a powerful hand enclose around my arm, twisting me to face whoever it was. My face almost collided with the person’s broad chest wrapped closely in the white tight shirt. I looked up and was immediately snapped back to reality. My face fell and I immediately brushed his hand off. "What is your problem? Do you wish to utterly annoy me through the entire day?!" I bellowed at him. He seemed taken aback, but his cool returned almost immediately. "I don’t have a problem. But it seems that you do Miss. Grumpy."

"Yes I do, and it’s you grabbing me out of the blue. I don’t even know you!" I said furiousity exploding within me. He gently chuckled and grinned. "Well, all you had to say was that you wanted to get to know me." I opened my mouth to argue but he just continued. "I’m Coren, basketball team captain…" He leaned in a bit closer until he was an inch away from my ear and said, "… and lover." I pushed him away, disgust written all over my face and just walked out angrily, holding onto my tray for dear life.

I had seen her from afar. Only one chance to do this right. I strode towards her, nearly missing her. I caught her arm and swung her around, her face nearly fell into my chest. I stared into her eyes and listened to her angry words. She was very testy and right then and there I realized that I couldn’t impress her with my old moves. After a minute had passed since she had shoved me off, I walked back to my seat. No one had even realized that I had gone.

"Did you see that Pan?" April asked Pandora as they hid behind the column. "Nothing but April." Pandora replied her eyes glistening with mischief. "Who does she think she is rubbing her greasy, pizza-licking fingers all over Coren. He doesn’t even want her!" April spat. Constance butted in, "But it doesn’t seem like she was all that interested in him." "Shut up Constance!! Did I ask you anything?! No… so shut your gob… This is not going to work… not on my property."

Outside was boiling hot, and there seemed to be no shade from it. Then I saw the bright red hair belonging to Kathleen and walked over to where they were seated. "What took you so long, Bams?" Jade questioned in a boy-like voice and everyone else started laughing. "What?" I asked, wondering why they were laughing. "Did. Coren. Distract you?" Kathleen asked between bursts of laughter. I hit her on her shoulder playfully. "No!" I laughed, sitting down. "Ugh he’s just so arrogant!" "But he’s hot." Shannon said, and the laughing stopped as we all turned towards her with open mouths. "What? You can’t deny that he is sexy!" She said raising her slice of pizza in defense. We shook our heads in disgust and went back to eating.

Because of Coren my chips were now soggy and my pudding had gone cold. Ugh.
"So what class do we have now?" Kathleen asked scraping the rice pudding cup with her spoon, trying to get the last drop of pudding out. "Umm… I left my schedule in my locker." I said after checking my bag. "Well I don’t have mine either, but I think that me and Shannon have Chemistry after lunch." Jade said. "So what about us?" Kathleen said pointing at me and looking dumbfounded. "Do you have your schedule on you?" Jade asked her eyebrows raised high.

Kathleen pointed at her purple version of Jade’s red one-shouldered skull, and bones bag slammed down next to her with bits and pieces of paper sticking out and shrugged. I reached over the table and plucked it up, several yellow post-it notes falling out as I did. "Hey, Hey! Watch it. You don’t know what those are!" Kathleen said grabbing them up from the floor. "Bet you don't either!" I laughed, continuing my search through the messy bag. "You really need to start getting organized Kat." Shannon said peeping over the table at the pile of papers now next to me. Kathleen made an irritated sound and started playing with her soiled napkin. I finally pulled out the crumpled paper written by hand in black ink. We had all decided to just write our schedule on one paper and color code it, so that we know who is with whom and then photocopied it to make life a bit easier:

I took a glimpse under, "Wednesday," and then read the color codes. "Actually Jade, you and Shannon have French class… While me and Kathleen have Drama." I announced to the table. "French?! You have got to be kidding me…" Shannon mumbled. She hated French with all her being. Matter of fact, she disliked anything that took more than 2 months to know and at the top of the list was languages. Then the bell rang, louder than before. I shook myself and began sorting my stuff out. We had 3 minutes before the second bell rang indicating that we have 2 minutes more to get to class. Jade threw away the garbage and we all waited until Kathleen had finished stuffing the papers into her bag. "Well off you two go… to French. Dum-dum-dummmm!" Kathleen said, in a low voice, mainly to Shannon as she got up, making her grimace in response.

Jade threw her arm over Shannon’s shoulder and drew her in close to her, squeezing her cheeks like she was a new-born baby. Something she always did to cheer Shan up. As we walked back through the now empty cafeteria, we tried to talk about the sleepover tonight at my house. Jade couldn’t come because she had to go to an art gallery opening with her mum, so it was just me, Shan and Kat tonight. "Remember you’re bringing ice cream Shan." Kat said as we stopped at the French classroom to let off Jade and Kat. "Yeah I won’t forget." Then they both disappeared into the classroom. We turned on our heels and headed towards the auditorium, all the way at the far end of the school. RINNGG!!! The second bell had caught us in the hallway. "Come on Bams!" Kathleen yelled, grabbing my hand and steering me down the hallway, skidding on her purple converse as she went. I had trouble running in my heels, even if they were wedged.

I had to stop every now and again to massage my feet and to check if my toes were still attached to them. "Kat. Kat. Wait up Kat. Slow down. Please. For heaven’s. Sake. Slow down." I said between each lung crushing breath. "We’re gonna be late no matter what." I continued as she came back for me. She laughed at the sight of me but waited until I had got back my breath. Then we were off again, not running, but definitely not walking. Within two minutes the large twin oak doors stood a foot from us. We took a deep breath and pushed through them. A well-built man in a peach shirt and black pants stood on the stage, his ponytail swinging wildly as he moved a large black box closer to the edge. We looked around for a place to sit and saw two empty seats at the back of the area marked off for the class and made a quiet run for them.

We managed to sit down just as he turned around to face the rest of the class. "Ok class, sorry for the delay. Now {he loudly clapped his hands} I am Mr. Perkins and I will be your new Drama teacher. So let’s have some fun!!" He said clearly, his voice rough but silky, as he tried to look at each person seated in the area. That’s when I got a clear visual on his face: He was unshaven by the looks of his beard and he had small beady and mischievous eyes. "Well today we will be doing interaction exercises… and by the looks of all the puzzled faces, you’re probably wondering what the hell I’m talking about." He paused to lean on the edge of the stage. "Ok you will be learning how to interact with persons of the same and opposite sex. So you’ll be able to play a lover to a person you hate or a best friend to a person you don’t know. Understand now?" We all nodded in response. How hard could this be? Naturally Kat was my partner.

Our mission was good friend-bad friend. I was the good friend and Kat was the misbehaving one who I try to steer into good ways. Why on earth anyone would give Kat a bad person as a role was beyond me, it only gave her power. "You’re an hour late young man." I heard Mr. Perkins voice behind us. We swung around in the middle of our, "Interaction" and our eyes fell upon a demon in disguise, dressed in full black. He was tall, about the same height as Mr. Perkins, his dark hair trying desperately to escape the hoodie it was placed under. Then we saw Mr. Perkins pointing towards us, and I automatically took a step backwards. I didn’t want him as a partner! I looked at Kathleen but she seemed to be in a trance, she reminded me suddenly of Twilight and the word "Imprinting," popped up in my mind. I forced back a laugh.

*******************************************************

I looked in the direction Mr. P was pointing and shrugged. Girls. Just what I needed right now. Why did I come to class? Right now I could be enjoying a cigarette and a cold beer. I looked at them once more. The red-head stood out. She looked kinda wild. I like that about girls. I walked over to them as I stopped the music in my ears from playing and pulled out my earphones.

*******************************************************

He looked so good, his snakebites glistening in the dim auditorium lights. He was wearing a My Chemical Romance hoodie… my favorite group. Wait! Was Mr. Perkins pointing at me and Bams? Yes he was! My heart seemed like it wanted to jump out of my chest as I saw him walking slowly towards us. His bright blue eyes attracted me like a magnet, even though they weren’t looking at me. Bams discreetly nudged me, and I immediately came back to reality. I consciously pulled myself back together and pulled my arms up to my beating chest and folded them there. He finally reached us. "Hey," his smooth voice washed over me like an ocean on the shore. "Hey," Bams answered first, I knew she was hiding the fact that I couldn’t answer yet. "Ugh Hey." I replied quickly. "Well umm, Mr. P said I should join your group, something about a bad - influence of a boyfriend or some shit." He murmured.

Bams eyes widened, but I couldn’t decipher if it was because, he was now in our group or because of the word he used. I shrugged and we spent a few minutes making up another plot so that we could fit him in. I tried my best to keep my eyes off of him. "You too are friends?" His sudden question had blown me off guard. "What?" I asked and Bams looked up. "Are you too friends?" He repeated. "Yeah why?" I replied. "It's just that you two make a weird pair that's all," he shrugged. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Bams twist her body into a more upright position, and her eyes began to glisten with anger, a sign of her putting up her defense mechanism. I grabbed her hand, but she brushed it off gently. "Why do you say that?" She said in a calm voice, calm wasn’t good… not for Amber anyway. He looked up, not yet noticing her hostile attitude. "Well she’s more emo and out there, while you're kind of Preppy and annoying." Uh-oh. Preppy. Not a good thing to say to Bams. It wasn’t a word she favored at all.

Bams was on her feet within a blink of an eye and he jumped back in surprise. "Listen here you disgrace of a human being! {He had fear in his eyes as Bams towered over him}. You just met me two minutes ago and you think you have earned the right to judge me! {She laughed. Laughing wasn’t a good sign} Just because I don’t wear full black in hot weather like you do or decide to drill holes in my chin like you do, you think that me and Kat can’t be friends. Well you judgmental pig I will stuff my preppiness down your frigging throat and watch you choke on it!" Bams screamed at him as she bent over him watching him topple over his chair. Then we heard distant clapping and Bams turned around rapidly to see Mr. Perkins and the rest of the class clapping loudly. "Well done. This is an awesome group. You have breathed in the air of drama." Mr. Perkins said still clapping. I breathed out heavily.

*******************************************************

The bell rang ending the painful conversation with Mr. P about our performance. I could hear the thing at my feet mumbling bad words as he brushed off his pants, still on the floor. I grinned smugly, and told Kat to move out. As she stepped over him I heard her mumble sorry. I knew she liked him but… oh well I didn’t. I stepped over him, one heel on either side of his body and bent down to his level. "Call me Preppy again asshole." I whispered evilly. I rose to my feet and kicked him in the shin. He made a small sound, similar to a hurt animal and rolled over onto his stomach. I continued on my journey, triumph written all over my face.
