It’s Hudson Valley Apple Picking Season
Nothing says autumn better than hot apple pie, warm apple cider, the scent of apple butter on a muffin or applesauce with grilled pork chops. Luckily it’s that time again: Hudson Valley apple picking season. There is no better time to take advantage of the plethora of apples available in the area. You can have a great time picking your own apples with your family and making dozens of delicious recipes. Whether you are a gourmet, want to try some new dishes or just want to munch on an apple, apple picking season is the time to indulge.

Nutrition

Apples are a nutritious and healthy for you. An apple a day keeps the doctor away is an old adage but one that holds true based on nutritional studies. The apple is low in calories, has no fat or cholesterol, is high in fiber and contains beneficial vitamins and minerals. In addition, apples are the leading source of antioxidants. It’s no wonder people who regularly eat apples are healthy and younger looking!

Choosing a Ripe Apple

So, take advantage of Hudson Valley apple picking time by gathering up some apples at one of the many area farms and orchards. Before you start, though, make sure you pick your apples wisely. Make sure there are no bruises on the apples. A firm apple is much better. If you are unsure how to tell whether or not an apple is ripe, just ask. The local growers will know where to look and which areas you should pick from. Take the apple from the tree and give it a little twist to release it. Gather as many as you can use and have fun!

Apple Care

Once you have the apples, make sure you care for them properly so they last and remain fresh. Handle apples gingerly so they do not bruise and store them in a cool, dark place. Wash the apples only just before use and not in bulk when you get home. This will keep them from spoiling.

More Apple Uses

But, what will you use all those apples for? Apples are one of the most diverse fruits and can be used for a variety of different recipes. Of course, many people love to simply snack on an apple. Whether you like to peel it and cut slivers from it or simply take a big bite, apples are a delicious snack. But there’s more. Apple sauce, apple cider, apple juice, apple butter, apple jelly, apple crisps, apple tarts, coffee cake, apple muffins and apple bread are just some of the many apple recipes available to make. But what recipe collection would be complete without a traditional hot apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream? Enlist the help of the entire family from the picking to the baking and of course, nobody will complain about the eating!
