My brother shocked me after the weird kid staring at me incident. I went through my first two blocks sitting in the back of the classroom, the teacher too scared to make me go to the front of the room, and sat alone at lunch. Alumit sat by me. First time ever.

He just shrugged. "Don't be flattered. You looked lonely."

All the same, I did feel a bit happy. My brother abandoned his followers--there were sad girls looking at me with envy at other tables--to sit with his outcast sister. He had his moments.

He talked to me about small things. How my day was, if my teachers were mean, how many guys asked me out. I threatened to rip his eyebrow ring off on the last question. He laughed. The cafeteria food wasn't bad, granted my hamburger wasn't supposed to be pink and blue in the middle, and the French fries should have been cooked better. Worst case scenario for a vampire was a stomach ache. On a bad day you might even throw up.

I saw a pair of silver eyes glaring at me. I looked over and saw an angry face, then the guy with the black hoodie got up and walked out.

Alumit gave me a weird look. "Freak," he murmured. "And that's bad when it comes from me. What'd you do, Skunky, kick him in the crotch or something?"

I shrugged. "I dunno what I do. I guess I have one of those faces people seem to hate by magic. You have the face people want to punch."

My brother grinned. "Thanks. I'll remember that when you want a new book and I'm the one with the credit cards."

I poked him with a fork. He pretended to be dying, saying he needed to get to the hospital since he'd been stabbed by a deadly weapon. "Dork," I giggled in spite of myself.

Alumit took a bite of his chocolate chip cookie. "Damn, do they make these things with concrete or something?" He murmured, rolling his jaw. He looked at me, actually serious for once. "Seriously, Belle, that guy gives you any trouble, you tell me, okay?"

I was both touched and offended. "That's sweet, but I'm not your sweet baby sister anymore. I fight, I cuss, and I scare people. So thanks, but no thanks."

I walked out, looking at the room number for my next class instead of the name. There was a perfect seat there. I sat, comfortable with the darkness over me, but before long I wasn't the only one in the room. Dark hoodie, black jeans, combat boots. I would have misplaced him for my idiotic brother, but he was slightly shorter and more muscular. And my brother didn't keep the hoodie up while indoors. Something about this guy made me think he wanted to scare me away.

"You're sitting in my seat." The voice was cold and clipped. Slightly deep. Kind of sexy.

I gave him my favorite sarcastic half-smile. "It's the school's seat."

"No, it isn't. I've sat there every year I've been here. I rightfully own this seat," he growled.

"So suck it up and sit somewhere else. New school year, things change. Deal with it," I glared.

He glared back for a moment. His hands balled into fists and I thought I was going to fight this guy--but the bell rang suddenly and people came in. They stared, not being subtle since you can't watch behind you, and watched the guy's next move.

I looked at the waiting audience. "You're call, dude." I looked at him.

His hands unfitted and he sat down next to me, still in the darkness. It was the only seat left. The crowd was sad suddenly, but some people looked at me with interest. One girl especially.

She had dark blue eyes that reminded me of the moon, with glossy tumbling light blond hair that was artistically done. "Hi, you're that new girl, right? Evernight?"

I nodded. "Yes. Why?"

She smiled brightly. "I just met your brother. He's hot!" I rolled my eyes. "So, um, there's this party Saturday and I was wondering if you'd like to go, with your brother, of course."

I smiled at her, a fake one most humans fell for. She wanted my brother, and the easiest way was through me. Smart girl. "I can't go, but I'll ask my brother. He's a bit more... wild."

She smiled brightly, then grabbed a piece of paper from her desk and scribbled down the address and number to call. She handed it to me. "Thanks!" She beamed, then sat down since the teacher walked in.

The teacher immediately glared at the boy in the hoodie. "That's a dead giveaway that you're trying to sleep. Hood down."

The boy was probably glaring.

"Now," the tiny teacher said. She said something in Spanish, a curse probably since this was the first time I've taken a foreign language other than French, and went to look through her desk. The boy didn't take down his hood. "What did I just tell you? Do I have to report you to the principal's office?"

I chuckled under my breath. The boy growled. He lowered his hood, revealing light blond, nearly white, hair.

The teacher smiled. "Okay, now for the roll!" She went through the first few names. "Declan Collins?"

The boy with white hair raised his hand slightly. "Presente." That meant present in Spanish.

The teacher smiled brightly. "Oh, here's a new one, Bellinda Evernight?"

"Aya," I said in Spanish, which meant 'here.' "But it's Belle, not Bellinda."

She smiled. "I know, but Bellida is easier to translate. So I'll call you Bellinda in here."

I just shrugged and let it go. She called a few more names. The girl who wanted to invite my brother to the party was Gabrielle Starr.

Class went through quickly. I was one of the first people out of class. Alumit met me shortly after I walked out. It was his last class. "Good luck, man, she speaks everything in Spanish to you."

Alumit wiggled his eyebrows. "Oh, I might like it."

I could Gabrielle watching us at a safe distance. I grabbed my brother's elbow. "This girl, Gabrielle, wanted to invite you to a party this Saturday. Here." I handed him the paper. I made a face at him. He understood and nodded, smiling.

"Wicked. I'll be there!" He walked inside the class. I could hear the very pleased Gabrielle breathe a sigh of relief.

I rolled my eyes and spent my last class in a daze. I walked out halfway through, saying I didn't feel good. The teacher gave me some slack and said I could go home. Maybe it was because I did a bit of mind control... Whatever, I couldn't deal with another hour of hearing about prehistoric people building the wheel.

I popped my iPod into my jacket and put the speakers in my ears. I listened to "Hero" by Nickelback.

I dozed off and say, vaguely, a figure with white hair and black jacket walk out of school.
